Mr and Mrs Henry Dreyer lead sixty five World War One veterans and Ladies Auxiliary members from Ft Worth and Dallas to Washington D C. They seek action from the Veterans Affairs committee on pension bills for veterans and widows, aiming to ease living expenses. Delegates plan two days of talks with Congressmen and Senators before returning to Texas on Sunday.
Collier Perry of Rockdale High School has won the 1962 Alcoa Foundation Scholarship for children of Rockdale Works employees. The 18 year old plans to use the $2500 award to study chemical engineering at Rice University or Texas Tech.
Funeral services for Mrs Ver ona Kovar 91 will be held Friday at 10 a m from St Cyrill and Methodius Church. She died at her Buckholts home Wednesday at 11 50 a m. Born May 16 1871 in Czechoslovakia she lived in Buckholts 50 years. Burial at Marek cemetery. Rosary Thursday 7 30 p m at Marek Burns Funeral Home. Survivors include two sons five daughters twenty one grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. Pallbearers are grandsons.
Cameron district meet at Texas A&M College features six first place literary honors by Mary Ann Rice Peggy Schiller Judson Smith Carol Ann Crook and others earning top three in extemporaneous speaking poetry interpretation debate and typing. Yoe High dominates junior girls tennis doubles with Lucinda Fickenhorst and Pam Neeley winning.
A collision at about 9 p m Saturday injured Joe Kopriva of 206 North Karnes and caused total loss of two autos and damage to a third. Kopriva, injured in the crash on North Travis between 11th and 12th streets, is in satisfactory condition at St. Edwards Hospital. His 1949 Chevrolet struck two parked cars, a 1958 Chevrolet owned by Griffin T Burnett of Cameron and a 1961 Pontiac owned by Linda Sue Kirk of Cameron were totaled, with damage to the Pontiac around 400 dollars.
Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Wednesday for John A. Marak Sr., 83, who died Monday evening in a local nursing home. Born August 1, 1878 in Cubana, he lived in Marak Community 49 years, was a retired farmer and KJT member. Burial in Marak Cemetery. Rosary Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Survivors include wife Adela, two sons John Jr. and Henry, four daughters Annie Ermis, Agnes Jeter, Mollie Hubnik, Margaret Tumala, two brothers, three sisters, 27 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Marek Burns Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Miss Paty Criswell is named a Phi Beta Kappa member for academic achievement and receives a faculty appointment in the Austin public schools for the 62-43 term. She is the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Criswell of Cameron and daughter of Lt Col and Mrs Thomas Criswell of Mass.
School election is set for Saturday April 7. Yoe Band Concert on April 24 at Yoe High Gym. Cameron hosts a women s golf association tournament. Smiley Burnette Show on April 26 at Milam Courthouse 1 3, 4 30 and 7 30 p m. Milam Junior Broiler Show and Banquet on April 28. Mth District American Legion Convention on April 29 at the National Guard Armory.
Dr. Earl Knebel of College Station and former Cameron superintendent will speak to the PTA on Effective Learning for Aero Space tonight. The meeting at 70 p.m. in the Ben Milam Cafetorium will also review cub scouting duties of the sponsoring agent and vote on the PTA life membership recipient.
Willie Lee Hood of Tyler, 67, died Friday in a Houston VA Hospital after a several month illness. Rev. Walter Huber led services Sunday at Temple with burial in Bellwood Cemetery. He was born near Liberty Community, Milam County, to J. B. and Florence Hood. Survivors include wife Clara King, three brothers J. D. Hood, L. C. Hood, A. J. Hood, a sister Mrs Jim Brooks, and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs Cora Stratton of Austin died March 25 at age 78. Born Milam County she lived in Austin thirty years. She is survived by three daughters Mrs Myrtle Swartz of Chicago Illinois Mrs Willie May Hagen of Austin and Mrs Agness Wright of Austin and three sons Jerry of Ohio Guy and Harvey of Austin. Also eight grandchildren six great grandchildren three sisters and two brothers. Buried March 28 at Friendship Community in Milam County.
Albert Massengale, 70, had funeral services last week at First Baptist Church Robstown. Surviving are two daughters Mrs Morris Whatley of Corpus Christi and Mrs John Clemons of Alice, two brothers Ben Massengale of Cameron and Eldred of Freeport, two sisters Mrs Joe Rettig and Mrs Carlton Crook of Cameron, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The Cameron City Council resumes regular business after reviewing election results and actions. Reports cover drainage and sewer work, street leveling, paving bids, and a proposed North Washington sewer extension. Airport lease issues prompt a request to remove cattle from the runway as a special April 12 session to update ordinances is planned. Roy Griffith sworn in as senior councilman with Sam Houston and Starrett Hickman by City Atty Charles Smith Jr.
Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Ada Henderson Cafetorium for the Cameron Independent School District vote. Charlie M. Burke and incumbent Niley J. Smith run unopposed for three year terms. Burke aims to fill the seat vacated by Dr. David Shapiro who moved to Port Arthur. Other board members include Milton Schiller, F. W. Vogelsang, Dr. S. H. Richardson, Dr. Robert Tumlinson and Dr. Gus Evans Jr.
Funeral services are pending for Captain John H. Delony 29 son in law of Mr and Mrs Allen Dodson of Cameron He died Monday of a heart attack after a virus infection He and his wife former LaVerne Dodson and their four children lived in Madrid Spain where he was stationed at Torrejon Air Base His body will be flown to the United States for burial Mrs Delony arrived in the States Wednesday He was a Ruston La native served in the Air Force 11 years and was a jet pilot until two years ago He had been stationed in Spain since June Survivors include his wife four children Jim 6 Melissa 5 David 2 Lora 7 months his mother Mrs Alyne Delany Ruston and two brothers
Mrs Ludie Pharries died at home Tuesday at 3 p.m. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Milano Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Lockhart officiating. Burial followed at Smyrna Cemetery near Milano. She was 91 and had lived in Milano 17 years. Survivors include five daughters and many grandchildren. Greens Funeral Home handled arrangements.
A. J. Mondrik of Mondrik's Minimax Cameron announces the purchase of B and B Minimax Rockdale supermarket. The deal completed Monday. Rockdale owners were Ben Blaylock and Hugh Barnett. Mondrik has about 30 years in Cameron grocery business.
Voters favored removing parking meters 347 to 270 and the council halted meter enforcement. Mayor Coleman Duncum and three councilmen Roy Griffith Sam Houston and Starrett Hickman were re elected. Meter revenue and a planned $400 monthly net were cited as factors. The vote prompted immediate meter head removal and potential budget cuts.
In Cameron on a Saturday dawn a dispute on Scott Street led to a fatal shooting that killed Willie Swain and wounded Robert Milton. Pvt Joe Kellough and Pvt Wille Hawkins of Fort Hood face murder and assault charges and illegal firearm possession. their bond set at 7000 and 1000 dollars respectively. The two were later detained in Killeen.
