Montezuma Georgia May 16 The spring term of the Superior court adjourned after days of sessions chiefly spent on murder cases Henry Ivey a black man was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the Bowen case and sentenced to seven to twelve years Clifford McDaniel a white man was also convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the Hobbs case and sentenced to two to ten years
Hon John R Phillips member of the State Highway Board spent Friday night at the West Hotel Saturday he inspected roads in the area and was given a cordial reception by many of the county's leading citizens.
Final plans were completed for a Tom Huston corporation peach plant in Montezuma Georgia. The steel and brick structure, 60 by 200 feet, will use freezing to preserve peaches figs and other fruits and vegetables and should open by July 1.
Atlanta May 16 State Highway Department officials and employees were ordered to refrain from political activity. Captain J We Barnett said loyalty to building roads is the department’s sole purpose and any campaign involvement would jeopardize their jobs. He urged all workers to vote their convictions but keep politics separate from duties.
Millen Georgia May 19 1930 Reverend T R Harvill expresses heartfelt thanks to the people of Butler and surrounding community for kind words prayers and courtesies shown during his visit. He praises local spiritual leaders Bro B H Dunn and Bro H C Griffin and hopes one inspirational meeting spurs greater church service.
In Columbus Georgia on May 20 Robert Dennis 25 entered Buckeley Beauty Shop in the Third National Bank building and fatally shot his estranged wife Doris Dennis 19 before killing himself Both died instantly as customers and employees were present The incident drew crowds into Twelfth Street and the building corridors Reports also mention a local man killing a hen and her brood while attempting to shoot a rabbit in a nearby her fowl house.
The South Georgia Power Company reports a comprehensive upgrade from Whitewater to Reynolds to meet rising commercial electricity demand. A 44000 volt line is in service and work will shift from Butler to Junction City with No. 4 to No. 1 copper, causing brief Sunday outages for about four weeks.
Regular service moved to 2 PM next Sunday to allow attendance at Butler High School commencement at 11 AM May 25. The change enables all to attend both events at local venues in the city.

In Lakeland Florida on May 19 14 year old Jean Gray Brown granddaughter of Professor F G Oliphant of Macon fell into a three foot abandoned well eight feet deep during a sorority initiation. She crafted a makeshift raft from a plank and bricks to stay afloat and guided rescuers by dragging a broom to mark her path. Firemen pulled her to safety and she recovered at home.
Dallas Texas May 20 Dr P Kern of San Antonio and Dr Arthur J Moore of Birmingham born in Georgia were elected to the college of bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church on the third ballot with six votes separating them One bishop remains to be selected another ballot was taken Lucaday night with results to be announced later The choice lay between Dr T D Ellis Louisville and Dr Forney Hutchinson Oklahoma City
The cemetery committee of the local Chapter U D A appeals to the public especially those with relatives buried in City Cemetery to join a June 3 work day. Volunteers should meet at 7 a m with brooms and tools to clean grounds. A Thursday evening May 29 minstrel is planned for entertainment.

Mrs. Owen Barfield, 84, longtime county resident and neighbor, was found dead in bed Wednesday morning. She is survived by two sons and three daughters. Funeral services at Bethlehem Cemetery today at 11 o'clock.
Butler friends of Prof and Mrs F G Oliphant of Macon are contemplating a delightful motor trip to the Pacific coast and western state points starting about June 1 and returning in about 20 days. Mrs Oliphant was formerly Miss Jeanette Wallace daughter of Col and Mrs H P Wallace of this city.
