The Fiore Nore pie for Which many are taking interest is noted. The Old Maiden Club sponsored by the American Legion was postponed to a later date. Upcoming school exercises in both literary and music departments are announced. The Baptist Church welcomes visitor John Hinguy returning from New Orleans for Southern Baptist convention. The Dante Clans at the local school were entertained with a picnic at Persons Lake. Twenty-one Young men and women will receive diplomas on May 27 at the local high school. A Bacalaure sermon is planned for May 25 at Americas Normal College. Makonn offers prizes for an essay contest open to boys 14 to 19. entries may be obtained at the Herald office.
The Butler High School Music Department announces two May recitals culminating in a May 26 operetta Good Morning Glory sponsored by Junior Music Club. Cast includes Kathleen Peed Ophelia Hartman Jimmie and Glory roles with local talent and chorus, plus a synopsis of the operetta and student performances.
Atlanta reports Georgia will not ship any peaches with worms or rotten fruit this year. Commissioner Eugene Talmdge announces changes to grade designations adding US threes and eliminating unclassified. Sizes will be disregarded and packing labels simplified while strict enforcement remains for worm and rot control.
The American Legion Post No 123 postpones the Old Maids Club play originally set for Friday night May 16 at Butler High School auditorium due to unavoidable circumstances. Gratitude is given to the 50 volunteers who helped prepare and they are asked to cooperate again in the summer with a new date to be announced in these columns.
Plans form for a profitable and enjoyable event at Mt Neberchurch on the second Sunday and the Saturday before in June. The annual singing convention is set for the community. Elder J By Knott will fill his regular appointment on Saturday but will call off Sunday service for the convention.
Macon May 10 W A Harden 40 an iron worker was killed instantly at 1 pm Saturday on the Leon S Dure farm when a tenant named Robert Davis 35 shot him during a dispute over a disabled pump Harden was working on the pump on the Dure property Davis fled the scene The 1980 Taylor County tax digest is under examination for equalization by the Equalization Board chaired by J L Austin with members W T Gostin and H L Wilbar Tax Receiver C G Cooper and clerk B Jarrell aiding the process
Roberta Ga May 13 W T Carty 17 retired planter died at his home in Gaillard near Roberta Tuesday He was a third cousin of Gen Benjamin Hawking and connected to George Washington founder of the trading post that became Macon The widow four sons and a daughter survive
Paul Gilbert visits rehearsals showing interest in Glory as the show unfolds. He declares affection with talk of giving the rainbow. Helen lands a strong comedy part under the harassed director while Glory and Kurt announce their engagement to Gilbert.
Butler Georgia May 10 1980 the Democratic Executive Committee of Taylor County adopts a September 10 1980 primary for governor state house officers Congress from the third district state senate 28th district and Georgia House of Representatives with white voters pledging party support paying assessments to the secretary and authorizing ballots and papers to be prepared. The meeting also notes new Georgia Federation officers installed at Wesleyan Chapel with Mrs S V Sanford Athens as president and remarks on the convention's achievements and the student aid and memorial scholarships supported by the federation.
County Agent Lundy calls Taylor county farmers to address winter legume residue and corn earworm risk. He advises turning under or cutting hay, watching oats and vetch for worm damage, and promotes oat and vetch hay quality. He extols sessile soybeans and Biloxi beans for forage, explains planting and cultivation guidance, and urges brush control to protect summer pastures. He notes livestock needs and soil nitrogen benefits from legumes and compost.
Messrs F C Jarrell G W Bivins and J F Helms attend the annual county commissioners convention in Valdosta now in session since Tuesday.
Revival services at Butler Baptist Church concluded Sunday night with a strong sermon by Rev B H Dunn and cooperation from other denominations. Millen preacher W Y KK Hargill delivered five days of impactful messages to large congregations, with special music inspiring the services and the community expecting lasting good from the revival.
The Bethel church home coming annual meeting over Saturday and Sunday featured Rev H C Griffin delivering a foundational sermon on the church built by Christ, a noon dinner, a Sunday school Mothers Day tribute, and visitors from out of the county. Local attendees included Rev and Mrs Hl G Griffin and others. Sunday services opened with Sunday school and concluded with Rev Birdsong preaching on heaven’s beauties and reality. Both days offered substantial spiritual and social benefits for attendees.
Reynolds, with a long standing record in innkeeping, again leads in marketing the first crate of peaches for the state. The Mayflower variety crate was shipped by express yesterday from Reynolds to William Shapiro & Co. Inc. in New York, arranged by C. H. Neisler, Marketing Agent. The peaches were grown by Ray Stubbs, a well known Reynolds community farmer, who received congratulations from friends of all colors.
Unease surrounded Judge A H Riley Friday as he suffered a setback but has since rallied and improved. His son H Mey, a government employee, arrived from Florida on Sunday and will stay several days.
A class of five young men received their Master’s degree in a strong ceremony led by a skilled Americus degree team. About 100 Masons from Taylor and neighboring counties attended to witness the impressive ritual, followed by a social dinner prepared by a group of pleasant young women.
Sheriff R P McGuffin seized two cars Sunday night and took warrants for the occupants charging operating a car without lights and without license tag and transporting liquor.
A Miami man, George Green, 35, was killed in a head on collision on the Atlanta Albany Highway near Ellaville. Mrs J T Clark and her sister, both of Leesburg, were uninjured. Green died at Bilaville drug store about 15 minutes after being brought there. Green’s father C G Green of Gretna Florida was notified.
The Grand Lodge of Georgia sponsors a preliminary essay contest on "How the Proverbs Can Help Me Make My Life a Success" with local prizes of five dollars and two fifty prizes, feeding into a state contest. Open to youths up to 19, entries receive a copy of the Proverbs. local judging May 81 at the Lodge building, with dates announced later and information through the Herald office.
Mr and Mrs H J Brooks chose a 16 month old brown eyed boy found in an Atlanta orphanage to adopt. They carefully review his family record and find strong American blood with intelligent, respected parentage. Bobby, as he is called, has a warm home and foster parents already planning his future happiness.
