Fayetteville bank raid and kidnapping end with $1,600 stolen as three white men flee to Atlanta. Hewell, cashier at Farmers Merchants Bank, held hostage with his wife and infant for hours while police from Atlanta and Fayetteville searched for the trio. One suspect later arrested after a tip led to capture.
Atlanta May 5 Governor Eugene Talmadge accused Thomas H MacDonald chief of the U S Bureau of Public Roads of meddling in Georgia road matters He warned it would be fatal to change authority over two engineers the governor seeks dismissed Barnett of the state highway board released a telegram from MacDonald stressing federal aid funds are at risk The exchange centers on five engineers whose names the governor ordered removed from the budget The telegram indicates serious concern over the Georgia administration of federal road funds Turn to Page 8 No 2.
Ellaville Georgia May 9 Carolyn Ford fourteen year old Natigatee and Mrs H L Fulford were struck by lightning during a storm Monday evening. Miss Fulford received a severe shock when lightning struck the light wire as she attempted to turn on the lights at the Fulford home. Her condition was not considered serious. Lightning struck the steeple of the Baptist church and tore down portions of the steeple. Most lights in town were extinguished during the storm and rain lasted several minutes.
The Talbotton Teanat Grove Woman's Club met at Mrs W L Smith's home with Mrs Fred Coan and Miss Annie Bartlett assisting. President Mrs S Castellan chaired the business session which approved sending eight to Tallulah Falls School and discussed dues. Members presented Homecraft topics including patchwork quilts and home textile rugs, with a display of antique and modern handmade items such as crochet spreads and crocheted rugs.

Atlanta May 9 The clash over the State Highway Department between Gov Talmadge and Chairman Barnett and Commissioner Vereen grows tenser after a closed door conference. The governor gave no details, saying the meeting was executive in nature and not over. Vereen has sided with Barnett, has been asked to resign, and a vacancy could tilt board support toward the governor.
Athens Ga May 6 A H Jennings of Sumter county wins the state farming championship in the third Profitable Warming contest judged by the Georgia State College of Agriculture and Georgia Power company He posts 864 40 points from a 1000 total and secures 100 cash prizes for statewide and district titles leading all contestants by over 150 points in farm efficiency scoring, after previously winning the southwestern district prize in 1931.
The Ritz Silvertown and Five Points theaters in Thomaston Upson county will begin a joint operation on Monday May 8 under existing management. All pictures will be shown at the Ritz and Silvertown one day each, with specials possibly two days. Programs change daily, showing six pictures weekly to bring better terms and service to the public.
Montezuma Georgia May 6 a new Buck Creek bridge on the Reynolds Ideal road will be built immediately to replace the temporary structure at this point in 1929. The state highway department will take over the road on completion. Special efforts aim to finish by July 1. The temporary bridge lasted 12 months longer than expected after the concrete bridge collapsed.
Mrs Elizabeth Reichert Steed wife of Joe M Steed veteran railroad man and Macon civic figure died Monday night at the Steed home 810 Oak Street. Born in Macon 53 years ago she endured paralysis four years and was mostly bedridden though she enjoyed the porch outing Sunday. Survived by husband Fred Reichert sister Mrs BE S Davis of Atlanta brother Fred W Reichert and stepson Joe N Steed Jr of Columbia and a Macon nephew Cliff Cunningham.
A Herald correction references a misreported state order about excluding married women teachers for the 1983 84 school year. A State Department letter from M D Condl ins clarifies the state board has not acted and local boards decide employment. The notice ends with an invitation to a Union Church community singing next Sunday.
John A. Smith of Talbotton was elected state consul of the Modern Woodmen of America at the quadrennial head meeting in the Hotel Dempsey. A. L. Giradin of Valdosta became state clerk. Atlanta was chosen as next meeting place in 1937. Max Wilk of Augusta was named Georgia delegate to the national meeting in Detroit. North and South Georgia will hold separate annual meetings, with Augusta hosting the 1984 North Georgia session on Labor Day and Douglas hosting the South Georgia gathering on July 4.
Taylor County youths selected by the County Relief committee enrolled this week at Fort Benning conditioning camp in Columbus. List includes Hughland Chapman Ira Whittle A W Trussell Frances Peed Joseph Dickerson Dana Downs Cecil Pennington Hendley Saunders Robert Newsome and Joe Bloodworth. Twelve others await orders. Groups enjoy swimming at Jeff's Hole and tours of Fort Benning Infantry School with attendance at polo baseball and other exhibitions. New reserve officers ordered to duty at Fort Benning will be assigned at three per company.
The cooperative sale held Saturday at Reynolds and Butler drew strong turnout for late season poultry. A total of 8501 pounds were sold, with Reynolds contributing 550 and Butler 251 pounds. Leghorn cockerels made up about 20 percent of the load, totaling 688 pounds. With many Leghorn fryers left, favorable prices may trigger another sale around May 27, run by Warren and Company with county agent support. Prices may rise if demand stays steady but a decline is expected in three weeks.
A motion for a new trial in the International Shoe Company versus J H Turner of Mauk was argued in Taylor superior court before Judge C F Mc Laughlin and denied. The jury awarded the plaintiff over 200 dollars. Plaintiff’s counsel was W Steed and defendant’s was O W Foy, both of Columbus.
Readers are invited to attend a quilt show at the Baptist Sunday School rooms this Friday from 2 to 5 o'clock. Admission details are not provided in the notice.
A Taylor County Woman's Home Demonstration Council was organized at the courthouse in Butler on Saturday April 29 at 8 p m with 18 of 24 members present. Officers elected include President Mrs Rod Brown Vice President Mrs W G Hill Secretary and Treasurer Miss Martha Parks Chairman of Nutrition Mrs H H Gee See Committee Mrs E D McCorvey Home Improvement Committee Mrs W G Hill Gardening Committee Mrs Grady Fuller Fund Raising Committee members listed. County council sponsors all county wide Home Demonstration work and leads community clubs. A Singer Sawing Machine Company demonstration followed, drawing about forty attendees.
The Fittabilay Tribune notes the notable career of Dr. R. E. Porter of Butler a respected druggist. Born Scottsboro Ala Jan 1 1890 he earned his MD at Alabama in 1916 and served in the Public Health Service and World War I as a medical officer. He held posts in New York harbor Ellis Island NIH Washington Glasgow and the U S Marine hospital in Pittsburgh prior to settling at 1655 Beechland Boulevard in Pittsburgh.
The Young Women's Circle directed by Mrs. G. Roberts staged Esther with male helpers Linwood McGee John Anthony Paul Fain and Wanza Hartman. Cast changes included Birtha a chamberlain and others. Mrs Julian Edwards played piano with Mrs C B Bankston as soloist. Miss Kathleen Peede accompanied Mrs Edwards. Mrs L R Adams oversaw stage management as the audience filled the house and gave a generous free will offering.
Local event invites residents to submit quilts and bed spreads to the Sunday school rooms for a Friday afternoon exhibit from 2 to 5. A 10 cent admission will be charged for attendees with a committee on hand Friday morning to receive entries.

The Board of Tax Equalizers met at the Butler courthouse to reorganize and adjust assessable property for 1988 with P A Jenkins as Tax Collector. New members include L T Horton and L H Vanlandingham, replacing previous appointees. J H Turner named clerk. J F Rustin steps down. Tax Receiver Jenkins assists. The board will sit for about ten days.
Mr. 0. B. Bankston has bought the Bazemore share in Bazemore & Bankston grocery and market. He will run the business in his own name. Mr Bazemore will devote his time to stock raising and farming.
