Talmadge Opposes Extra Session to Legalize Beer in Ga
Atlanta May 2 Governor Talmadge issued a forceful rebuke to plans for an extra legislative session to legalize beer. He argued delaying legality is not an emergency, warned that debates over tax rates would prolong a lengthy process, and contended legal beer would not curb hard liquor consumption. Representative Eugene Epting reported broad pledges for a 12 day session, but the governor doubted that would suffice. He reiterated opposition to beer on any prohibition question and said he would not encourage drinking.

Americus, April 29 Fort Valley Cordele and Richland won top places in the Third district high school meet held in Americus Saturday. Ft Valley took first in the literary division with 28 points while Cordele and Richland tied for second with 18 each and Richland earned 12. Silver trophies for spelling track and meet contests went to Chipley Cordele and Ft Valley. In piano Vivia Waters Cordele won first with Hall Hawkinsville second and Dorothy Giles Richland third. Frank Harrison Ft Valley claimed first in declamation on Americas Dream with Morris Abram Fitzgerald second and Tom Marshall Americus third. Martha Giles Richland won reading honors. Thomaston Ga April 27 W L Roles eight filling station owner was found shot to death in the bedroom of his home Thursday. The family heard an explosion and discovered the body when they entered the house to investigate. A single barrell shotgun caused the fatal wound. He had been in poor health for some time and is survived by his wife and three young children.

Oglethorpe Ga April 27 Book Kleigler a negro Holy Roller preacher has been arrested for mule stealing. He is charged with stealing mules in Crisp Schley Dooly and Worth counties carrying the mules to different places and selling them. Sixteen mules have been recovered. For months farmers in Reynolds district and the southern part of the county reported mule disappearances blamed on Holy Roller visits.

Mother of Butler Citizen Dies in Crawford County
