Budget Approved Gives Ga. Teachers $200 Pay Boost

Georgia Education budget of 139,781,460 approved by Gov. Griffin and the State Board of Education includes a 200 annual raise for 26,000 teachers. The increase funds teacher salaries with 12.5 million from the state and 5.1 million from local funds under the Minimum Foundation Program. The board approved the budget quickly but debated education recommendations, including athletics program abuses, returning them for clarification to be resumed at the July meeting.

The Swimming Pool Committee reports a 500 donation from merchants and residents aided by auctioneer J. J. George of Columbus. A 1957 Ford raffle ticket is urged for further funds as work begins on the pool behind the Community House with hopes for rapid completion.

Former Butler Boy Named to Hospital Post in Dayton

Ferrell B. Driskell, once of Butler and now living in Atlanta, is named to head administration of Rhea County Memorial Hospital in Dayton Tennessee. A graduate of Emory University Medical Technology and Georgia State College, he trained at Hamilton Memorial and has worked for Lockheed and C J Harris Community Hospital. He began work June 10 and will operate the new hospital expected ready by September. applications to employ him are taken at his Dayton Bank and Trust office.

Salzer Brother Dies in Florida Funeral Held in Jacksonville

Joseph J. Salzer, born June 13 1886 in Savannah, dies after brief illness in Jacksonville. Survived by wife Georgia, daughter Mrs Harold Mason, sisters Mrs Bertha Bazemore and Mrs W H Wright, brothers George V and Grover W Salzer, and several grandchildren. Funeral services held at Jacksonville Methodist church with Butler relatives saddened by loss.

Two Out-of-Town Deaths Occasion of Genuine Sorrow

Local friends mourn the deaths of Mrs. Brinson Florence Hines of Macon and Laura A Wilder of Atlanta both died June 12th. Florence Hines daughter of the late R D Hines leaves four sisters and relatives in Butler Taylor and Macon while Laura Wilder longtime Forsyth native and Forsyth teacher died after a lingering illness in Atlanta survivors include two sisters Georgia and Henrietta Wilder of Atlanta.

W. E. Sullins of Butler joins T. W. Wilson to operate the Ellaville drug store. The firm becomes Wilson-Sullins Drug Co., Inc. Sullins, a recent B.S. in Pharmacy from Auburn, moved to Ellaville with his wife and their three year old son William III. Sullins' mother resides in Butler.

All-Day Singing at Shiloh Church on Fourth Sunday

There will be an all day singing at Shiloh Primitive Baptist church on the Fourth Sunday in June. Dinner will be served on the church grounds at the noon hour. Everyone invited to come, bring a basket lunch, and enjoy the day of gospel singing and old-time fellowship.

Remodeling Completed at Reynolds Church

Reynolds Methodist church completes remodeling of the Sunday School department begun last April. Aiming for 150 attendees at opening services, with Sunday School at 10 and morning worship at 11. Neil Hinton did the work and June 26 features a Budget Pledge Supper in the social hall with Dr. Leonard Cochran as guest speaker.
