The note reports Highway 19 North of Thomaston now marked with warning signs and a 45 mph curve caution. It also mentions Senator George’s health recovery, upcoming weddings in Taylor County, and a 50th wedding anniversary in Macon.
Georgia Education budget of 139,781,460 approved by Gov. Griffin and the State Board of Education includes a 200 annual raise for 26,000 teachers. The increase funds teacher salaries with 12.5 million from the state and 5.1 million from local funds under the Minimum Foundation Program. The board approved the budget quickly but debated education recommendations, including athletics program abuses, returning them for clarification to be resumed at the July meeting.
Dr Leonard Cochran pastor of Mulberry Street Methodist Church Macon will be guest speaker at the Annual Budget Supper at Reynolds Methodist Church next Wednesday at 8 pm. He will discuss The Stewardship of Money. The supper aims to raise pledges for the 1957 58 conference year.
County winners were named June 12 in several 4-H Club projects. Aprons first Miriam Tucker second Melodye Hill third Ellen Guinn. Biscuit first Mary Edith Jarrell second Wanda Welch third Korona Waller. Dress Revue first Dondra Peed second Brenda Gassett. Muffins first Ann Benns second Dondra Peed third Miriam Tucker. Public Speaking Freddie Brown Jr Tayent Sue Moore and Jimmy Casey. First place winners will represent the county in the district competition at GSW Americus in August.
Reynolds and Butler join to sponsor a Fourth of July celebration at the Reynolds Golf Course. Activities include swimming beauty contest talent show and barbecue. Proceeds support Reynolds and Butler Swimming Pool funds.
A Northerner commends Butler citizens for promoting and funding a new community swimming pool. He praises local promoters who donate time and effort, hoping the pool will be built next year for children and residents to enjoy.
Capt James Braddy Mrs Braddy and children Pamelia and John depart June 13 for Tokyo to join the U S Army assignment. They expect to reach Honolulu June 20 then proceed to Japan after a short stay, sharing friends regret at their long absence and recalling a snowy Grand Canyon en route.
Howard Methodist church sponsors a barbecue dinner at the Howard Community Club House on July 4 from noon to 8 p m. Price is 1.00 per plate with proceeds for the parsonage fund.
The Swimming Pool Committee reports a 500 donation from merchants and residents aided by auctioneer J. J. George of Columbus. A 1957 Ford raffle ticket is urged for further funds as work begins on the pool behind the Community House with hopes for rapid completion.
Ferrell B. Driskell, once of Butler and now living in Atlanta, is named to head administration of Rhea County Memorial Hospital in Dayton Tennessee. A graduate of Emory University Medical Technology and Georgia State College, he trained at Hamilton Memorial and has worked for Lockheed and C J Harris Community Hospital. He began work June 10 and will operate the new hospital expected ready by September. applications to employ him are taken at his Dayton Bank and Trust office.
Joseph J. Salzer, born June 13 1886 in Savannah, dies after brief illness in Jacksonville. Survived by wife Georgia, daughter Mrs Harold Mason, sisters Mrs Bertha Bazemore and Mrs W H Wright, brothers George V and Grover W Salzer, and several grandchildren. Funeral services held at Jacksonville Methodist church with Butler relatives saddened by loss.
Local friends mourn the deaths of Mrs. Brinson Florence Hines of Macon and Laura A Wilder of Atlanta both died June 12th. Florence Hines daughter of the late R D Hines leaves four sisters and relatives in Butler Taylor and Macon while Laura Wilder longtime Forsyth native and Forsyth teacher died after a lingering illness in Atlanta survivors include two sisters Georgia and Henrietta Wilder of Atlanta.
W. E. Sullins of Butler joins T. W. Wilson to operate the Ellaville drug store. The firm becomes Wilson-Sullins Drug Co., Inc. Sullins, a recent B.S. in Pharmacy from Auburn, moved to Ellaville with his wife and their three year old son William III. Sullins' mother resides in Butler.
There will be an all day singing at Shiloh Primitive Baptist church on the Fourth Sunday in June. Dinner will be served on the church grounds at the noon hour. Everyone invited to come, bring a basket lunch, and enjoy the day of gospel singing and old-time fellowship.
Reynolds Methodist church completes remodeling of the Sunday School department begun last April. Aiming for 150 attendees at opening services, with Sunday School at 10 and morning worship at 11. Neil Hinton did the work and June 26 features a Budget Pledge Supper in the social hall with Dr. Leonard Cochran as guest speaker.

Rupert H D Club reports plans for a Chicken Dinner and Cutest Baby Contest to raise funds for the Community House remodel. Contest starts Friday at 6 30 PM with judges selecting winners. Entries for children 6 months to 4 years, $1 entry, dinner served after. Tickets from Smith's Pharmacy and Butler Drug Co. Adults $1, kids 75 cents.
