Sunday was observed as Father’s Day with well wishes for health wealth and happiness. June brings brides birds and flowers. a busy Sunday showed conflicts in religious and social events. The community awaits the first cotton bloom of 1957 from a local farmer for the Herald office.
The U S Department of Agriculture warns clothes moths and carpet beetles cause 200 to 500 million dollars in damage yearly. It recommends a mothproofing procedure including cleaning woolens, spraying mothproofing solution, and drying before storage.
Hon Sims Garrett Jr a former Taylor county resident of Marietta buys a controlling stake in Roswell Bank from founders Charles and J D Foster. Deposits have grown from 131000 to 4585000 in 35 years. Garrett sits on Southside Atlanta Bank board and chairs Marietta Commercial Bank board. He will likely become Roswell Bank chairman. Guy Webb remains president.
Sims Garrett Jr. of Marietta is elected executive vice president of the Georgia Motor Trucking Assn Inc. He succeeds E. S. Burke who resigned to return to safety work. Garrett, 44, born in Charing, attended Emory University and Academy, and worked in Milledgeville with auto dealership and gasoline distributorship ventures. He led Milledgeville’s 1953 sesquicentennial celebration.
Rupert H D Club sponsors a baby contest at Rupert Community House on June 21 at 6:30 p m Entries cost 1 00 with prizes, photos may appear in the Atlanta Journal A photographer from Americus will be on hand for optional baby photos Judges are from out of county Tickets available at Smith Pharmacy and Butler Drug Co adults 1 00 children 75 cents.
Bethel Congregational Methodist church starts revival Thursday evening through Wednesday June 19. Worship at 7 p.m. nightly with Rev. J E Holder of Carthage Mississippi as guest evangelist. He speaks on holiness and grace guiding souls from sin. Pastor Jerry Partain invites friends across the county to attend.
The Howard Methodist Church sponsors a barbecue dinner at the Howard Community Club House on July 4 from noon to 8 pm. Tickets are $1.00 per plate with proceeds benefiting the church parsonage fund.
The South Georgia Conference assigns Rev Ted Griner to Butler to succeed Rev H C Marx as pastor. Griner comes from Midway Church Columbus and exchanges pulpits with Marx, with other regional changes for Howard, Reynolds Crowell, and surrounding charges announced for the 1958 conference year.
Ira Hill Kirksey Sr. 72, Reynolds resident and former merchant, died at Macon hospital from heart ailment after a 10 day illness. Born Oct 13, 1884 in Taylor County he served 28 years as WOW Camp 452 secretary and belonged to Reynolds Methodist Church. Funeral at Reynolds Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Hillis officiating. interment Hill Crest Cemetery. Pallbearers named. survivors include two sons a daughter sister four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Goddard Funeral Home, Reynolds, arranged final rites.
Mr A Polk Jarrell, son of Butler residents and state vocational rehabilitation director, and Warden Fred T Wilkinson of Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, addressed John Marshall Law School graduates in Atlanta on June 1. Each received an honorary Doctor of Laws for notable service in their fields.
Farmers should file their gas tax refund claims for tractor fuel at the County Agent's Office from 8 to 12 a.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays. Tickets expire after six months from delivery, and refunds cover July 1, 1956 to July 1, 1957.
The Butler Swimming Pool Authority hosts a Saturday afternoon community auction on the courthouse square beginning at 3 p m to raise funds for a new pool. Donations are requested from Butler residents with local committee members coordinating a house to house canvass. Auctioneer J J George of Macon donates his services for this event.
B L McDaniel of Tazewell was unanimously elected vice president of Flint Electric Membership Corp Reynolds at the May board session. He has served as a director since 1938, missing only two meetings, and succeeds the late M S Vinson of Ft Valley. The board also honored Vinson with a miniature portrait and a commemorative resolution given to his widow.
Egg producers are invited to attend a two session course with Curtis Collier Extension Egg Marketing specialist. Topics cover gathering handling grading storing and marketing high quality eggs plus egg inspection with county feed dealers hatcherymen and egg marketing establishments assisting.
An all day singing is announced at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church on the Fourth Sunday in June. Dinner will be served at noon on the church grounds. Everyone is invited to bring a basket lunch and enjoy gospel singing and old-time fellowship.
Hon. Hugh G McCants prominent county official and educator died June 6 at Montgomery hospital after a lengthy illness. Born January 26, 1880, he served in the state legislature and as County Tax Receiver, taught in public schools, and was active in the Methodist church. Survived by wife Laura Rushin, two sisters, in laws and brothers in law, with funeral services conducted Friday at 4 p.m. by Rev Partain and Rev Hoke Hatcher. burial union cemetery. pallbearers were his nephews.
Leonard Freeman a former local builder and contractor 39 died Friday when his car left U S highway 19 five miles south of Americus rolled over crashed into a wooded area. He lived in Macon and belonged to Reynolds Baptist church Lizella Masonic Lodge Scottish Rite and Al Sihah Shrine. Survived by wife and several children. Funeral held in Macon Saturday.
Vacation Bible School starts June 17 and runs through June 21 at the Butler Church of the Nazarene. Sessions begin at 6 p.m. daily with activities planned for children aged 5 to 14. The correct date is June 17 and all interested youths are invited to attend.
