Taylor County 4-H Club boys enlist for a three day July encampment at Parks Fund. Thirty youths join the local encampment while others prepare for Camp Wilkins at Athens. The report notes countywide fishing and fair plans for the past weeks.
Local Brevini e revival services announced to begin at the lat church on the fourth Augmt Me. Rev Hassey of Manchester arranging machinery building next door to A D Chapa for soft drink distribution. Rev H C Griffin scheduling evangelistic services in summer with pastors from South Georgia Conference. crops abundant and summer in Georgia praised.
A conference assembly in the South Lears region gathered Butler and nearby districts with many faculty members in attendance. Notable attendees included Dr George Psser of Wesleyan College, Rev Mack Antho Blackshear, Rev J O Waylory, Elizabeth Brown executive, and Rev Roy Gardner among others from Macon Columbus Nashville and Ala. The meeting aimed to join the Epworth League and local Leaguers in a united program for the year.
In a June statement Hal M. Stanley, candidate for the Georgia Commissioner of Labor and Industry, asserts his record and finances support his qualification. He highlights experience with the Industrial Commission, Workmen’s Compensation, and state labor laws, noting funding from his own resources and calls for efficiency and justice in administering the department.
Two white men, Cobb and Marion of Thomaston, were jailed in Talbot County charged with burglary. Evidence tied them to a Saturday raid, with goods found at local homes. They await Superior Court action in September.
Georgia Masons plan St John s Day events and mark the 26th anniversary of the Macon Masonic Home on June 24. The board of trustees and Grand Master Hugh W Taylor urge substantial fundraising to enlarge and repair the home. Lodges statewide will hold meetings to collect subscriptions. Taylor cites a goal near 76 000 for additions and improvements. Delegations from Butler Reynolds Mak and Junction City expected for Talbotton gathering with speakers, a Masonic convention session, and a luncheon. A one day term of superior court was held with motions appeals and jurors drawn for October, as visiting attorneys attended.
Americus Georgia June 8 Edward Joyner the Americus youth was arrested for abetting recent attempted jail breaks by Hugh Thacker and Hy Hi Prat. Joyner had earlier pleaded guilty to burglary with Thacker and others and received a three year chain gang sentence and a $300 fine. Paroled after paying the fine, he was released but is now jailed again as a hearing before Judge Littlejohn looms.
Tabotton Gai, a youth from Talbotton, was sentenced to six months in jail on two counts of car theft. He pleaded guilty to stealing Fords from J. G. Philips and C. M. Woolfolk of Columbus. The Muscogee County sentence of three months plus twelve months on a gang charge was suspended, reducing the total penalty to six months in jail. Represented by J. Hi McGehee of Talbotton, the defendant faced two theft charges.
Mr J W Nelson of Tdeal visited the city on business yesterday and is a resident of another senatorial district. Nelson has many friends here who express strong interest in his candidacy for the State Senate. He is unopposed.
A fire at We Peach Valley Poultry Farm owned by Mr A E Guinn seven miles north of Butler destroyed a group of brooders with several hundred chickens inside. The blaze, possibly caused by an oil heater, was discovered in time to save much of the brood.
Court reporter Ro Perkins underwent what was described as a successful throat operation at Samaritan hospital temple University Philadelphia for throat trouble. He rested comfortably Friday night in Columbus and is expected to stay about a week with wife Mrs W W Perkins at his side.
Mrs W Moore of Junction City describes a visit to Berry School in Rome noting eight years of progress since her previous glimpse. She praises preserved log cabins renovated granite buildings, stone structures, scenic grounds, a spring fed lake with a rock bridge, apple orchards, and hillside nurseries. She admires Miss Martha Berry and the Gate of Opportunity, hoping local youth will seek the school’s chances for those unable to attend college.
A Sacred Harp Singing Convention was organized at Mt. Nebo church near Charing for an annual event on the second Sunday in June. The Sunday gathering drew unusually large attendance with a superb singing, and a noon dinner was provided for all present. The organizing committee includes J Garrett, F L Purvis, R L Garrett, and J W McCoy, with leaders from Columbus, Thomaston, Macon, Milaville, Toward, and nearby regions participating.
Announcement in Macon Daily Telegraph and Macon News states W T Anderson and P J Anderson acquire majority stock and operate Macon News. They vow to keep papers independent yet consolidate expenses, abolish Sunday edition, offer combined subscriptions, and maintain separate editorial staffs for balanced coverage in Macon Georgia.
An order revoking the parole of George Montfort, sentenced previously for a liquor charge, was signed by Judge McLaughlin on Monday. Montfort, described as a member of a gang, was returned to serve a six month sentence.
Americus youths June H Thacker and H C Pratt escaped Sumter county jail then were sent to the Sumter county gang. Pratt, serving three years for auto theft, and Thacker, also three years for burglary, were linked to a string of safes thefts and break ins at Americus mercantile stores.
Bert B. Johnson has been assigned to manage editor duties at the Macon News, the publication recently acquired by the Mason Telegraph.
Mr. Alex Goldstein reports the loss of a valuable stone from a ring several days ago and offers a liberal reward for its return. He cannot specify where or how the stone was lost and requests the finder contact him.
Mrs Geo Taunton widow of Geo Taunton died Saturday after years of illness. A lifelong county resident and daughter of D Peterman and Larkie Peterman she was 62. She leaves siblings W H Theus J H Harris Valley Walker Jack Peacock Worthin Taunton and Felton Peterman. Funeral was Sunday at Bethel church with Rev J T Adams officiating. Arrangements by J W Edwards II.
Mr Jake Rumph died suddenly Tuesday morning at his home two miles northeast of Butler after months of heart trouble. The 41 year old farmer from Rome Ga. had seven children and a surviving brother Lewis Rumph. Funeral and interment were at Bethel cemetery with Edwards Brothers in charge.
After months of suffering Mr E D Gassett a respected county citizen died peacefully Sunday morning at his home south of Butler where he farmed. A Methodist church member he was 61 or 62 and native to the county. He was twice married and survived by his wife and several children, brothers, and sisters. The funeral was held at Turner's Chapel Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev J T Adams with Edwards Brothers directing.
Members of several railroad brotherhoods and women’s auxiliaries gathered at the First Methodist church in Albany Sunday for a memorial service honoring departed members. Among those remembered were Mr. and Mrs. G T Layfield whose widow had been Miss Effie Chapman. Rev Reese Griffin preached the memorial sermon as railway groups and auxiliaries participated in the exercise.
Floyd Metyer, among 76 seniors at Peddie School in Hightstown New Jersey, received two prizes on graduation day June 2. He won the Point Medal for top term credits and a silver loving cup plus 25 dollars for sportsmanship, conduct, scholarship, and character. His parents are Mr and Mrs J F Meiyier of Georgia, and he planned to work in New York University’s registrar office while beginning studies in the university hall.
On Monday H B Walker bought out M R Williamson in the Guy Barber Shop while Williamson joined E H Bazemore in the market and grocery business. Williamson remains at the barber shop and J P Booth of Royston will replace Williamson, bringing five years of barber experience and specialization in ladies’ work.
H P Wallace was admitted as a patient at the Macon hospital for special cataract treatment of one eye. His many friends wish for a complete restoration of sight and comfort during his stay, which he will receive at the hospital.
Mr J B Locke recently brought specimens to the office describing his onion trap as outstanding in size and flavor for the section, noting quality comparable to the best locally produced.
A moonlit ride ends in tragedy as a Macon man R. L. Mingledorff Jr. 18 and his sweetheart Miss May Housse 16 die after a collision between a highway truck and a motorcycle near Lizella. Injured: Sam Cavender and Dan Hall. Cavender aided cement delivery. truck lacked license.
A crew under owner Mr J T Cochran is removing gins and machinery from the Butler Gunnery building to install a complete new gin outfit of much larger size. Cochran plans to have the plant ready for the cotton season opening around the first of August.
Kyle T. Alfriend, secretary of the Georgia Eilocation Association, was seriously injured in a sedan collision near Macon last night. Police said the crash occurred on a rural highway as emergency responders rushed him to a hospital for treatment.
W. W. Flemming a 65 year old editor and publisher of the Earry County Newsy Blakely died yesterday after four decades at the paper.
