The case involves a bank officer and notes that the money was sent to relatives in Montgomery and other locations. A minister’s son and his family are referenced in connection with local residence ownership as the investigation continues.
Montezuma Georgia reports two large construction projects employing about 800 workers and a promising peach crop. A $100000 peach freezing plant by Huston Inc. will open July 3 to 5 in Gainesville. Paving on the Dixie Highway connects Montezuma to the Peach county line, easing access for 150 workers. Peach growers foresee 400 to 500 cars shipped this season amid varied crop prospects.

Lakeland Ga May 31 C D Brantley editor of the Valdosta Times announces that Senator Rivers will file his gubernatorial entry fee Monday and begin campaigning Saturday June. A gala opening speech is planned in Lakeland at 3 pm with band music and open house at the Log Cabin home. The event will feature speeches by supporters and Rivers will be presented as candidate to the people. A sizable Lakeland campaign headquarters already operates with five stenographers.
The infant child of Mr and Mrs Clifford Hall of Butler was seriously injured when a wagon pulled by two mules ran loose after a passing train and struck their parked auto opposite the Citizen State Bank. The child was thrown from the car and rushed to Dr S H Bryan for treatment and is reported to be improving. The incident caused quite a stir with crowded Reynolds streets and visiting shoppers nearby.
Mr. Gordon Bazemore, who has been a student the past year at the Baptist Bible Institute in New Orleans, has returned home to spend his summer vacation. Mr. J. W. Edwards has completed valuable improvements to his home, interior and exterior.
Macon June 1 The Wesleyan College board of trustees began a search for a successor to President Dr W F Quillian after holding the initial committee meeting. Dr Quillian will continue as president until a replacement is named. Prof L P Smith was named dean to succeed Dr W K Greene who will return to Duke University. The committee will meet again to study the situation and prepare a recommendation for the full board.
Hon. C H Neisler will go to the State Senate without opposition as the Twenty third district comprising Crawford Houston Peach and Taylor counties closes candidate qualification. Taylor county seeks its man for the district with Neisler, current Taylor representative, securing unopposed status. Other qualified for Taylor Representative posts include C B Marshall of Reynolds and J T Childs of Butler. No local contests in the September 10 primary except for federal and state offices.
Four prominent young people including two young men and two young ladies were hurt Sunday afternoon when their car left Route Three south of Butler and hit an embankment. Only one required a physician, and injuries were not serious. the vehicle was badly damaged.
Macon Ga June 2 Sixty three Wesleyan College seniors received diplomas from retiring president Dr W F Quillian and heard former Gov J M Slaton of Atlanta deliver the address on imitation of Christ The Rev J E Rattenbury of Southport England gave the baccalaureate sermon with Bishop W N Ainsworth and Rev I P Tyson taking part Mrs Lulu Kendall Rogers the school's oldest living graduate attended Dr Quillian stated his final message to the class of 1910.
Having recently remodeled and otherwise improved her home, Mrs. A. J. McGee is now having the same given an attractive coat of paint inside and out.
Columbus Georgia, a textile center, reported unemployment under 3 percent as of April 2, the 1980 census date. C M Young district supervisor announced 1,716 unemployed out of a population of 43,078 in Columbus.
About 150 Ft Valley citizens gathered in Sidney Lanier Park for an al fresco year end affair. Miss Mildred Kendrick and Miss Catherine Greene read, Nell Snow and Bettie Greene danced, Col Leighton Shepard lauded civic club achievements, with all city officials attending.
About 200 people from Tay lor county and nearby counties attended the Third District Letter Carriers Association and Ladies Auxiliary meeting in Dawson. Hon D Rivers of Lakeland spoke at the morning program, a barbecue lunch was served, and district officers were elected for the coming year.
Prof and Mrs J O Martin of Atlanta made a short layover in Butler on Tuesday while en route home from Americus. He spent a few days in Sumter County as State School Supervisor promoting county schools.
Federal agents raided a seven mile from Thomaston distillery in Upson County arresting Perry Lanier and Lockie Lanier on two counts of possession and manufacture of whiskey. Four others escaped. About 300 gallon wooden stills were destroyed along with 800 gallons of whiskey and 3,500 gallons of beer. Both men held on $1,000 bonds.
Rey and Mrs. E. H. Dunn have returned from their wedding trip to Florida and will spend several weeks in Thomaston with friends and relatives.
News reports the death of two year old Myra Nell Hogg daughter of Mr and Mrs RL Hogg formerly of this county now in Columbus from burns after clothing ignited by a match in a basket of candy on the front porch. The child died at the scene and her body will be brought to Mauk for interment today.
