Highway Body to Turn Back State Felons
Atlanta June 2 The Georgia highway commission said it would turn back to the state all 540 convicts now working on commission projects as a stand against Governor Talmadge. Chair Capt J W Barnett said the action follows the governor’s demand to fire five highway engineers. Barnett accused the governor of trying to seize control of the department to build a political machine while noting the commission cannot fire the engineers or turn personnel over. The department lacks funds to pay workers, and contractors have not received payments. The governor warned of more money in the treasury if they continue the path of action.
