Local man Alton Baugh killed in Ellaville car crash

Local residents mourn the death of Alton Baugh 25 after a Sunday night automobile crash between Ellaville and Americus. He recently worked painting a sign for Dreizin Dry Goods near Butler. The accident also involved 20 year old Cleve Billie when their car overturned on the highway.

Poultry Farms Share National Egg-Laying Honor

Athens reports Mr. A E Guinn owner of Peach Valley Poultry Farm tied for first in the National egg laying contest sponsored by the Atlanta Journal and Strate College of Agriculture. The Marshall Farm at Mobile Alabama shared the honor. The hens produced 76 eggs in a week.

Poultry Car Co op Sale Schedules for Reynolds Butler

The Taylor County Poultry Committee plans a second cooperative poultry sale on Wednesday, March 5. The poultry car will stop at Reynolds around 6:30 AM and depart about 10:30 or 11, then reach Butler about noon and depart after dark. Bids will be opened Thursday at 2 PM by county agents at Perry, Fort Valley, Butler, and Greenville. Prices should rise from February levels. proceeds to be distributed via schoolchildren and local businesspeople.

Coca Cola Stock Jump Post Annual Report Reveal

Coca Cola stock rose from four to six dollars a share as dividends increase from four to six dollars. The Coca Cola Company announced the rise Monday after publishing its annual report, noting 1929 as the most successful year in the company’s history and implying a two million dollar gain in value.

Fire destroys Wynn place barn. eight mules perish

A barn fire at the Wynn place three miles south of Butler Thursday night killed eight mules and several hogs, with wagons, gear, and farm tools lost. Estimated loss is $5,000 with no insurance. Cause unknown but fodder in the loft likely fed the blaze. Owner H M Parker was away. J M Booth managed the farm and found the flames upon rounds.

Reynolds New Era to Debut in Reynolds March 5

After a three week subscription push, E W Reynolds plans a weekly Reynolds New Era edited by him. The name, chosen by E H Joiner, superintendent of Reynolds public schools, reflects local interest. The paper, produced in Montezuma Georgian facilities, will be trucked 20 miles and distributed via Reynolds post office with local ads and full news service.

Mrs J W Holsey Dies At Corsicana Texas

News has reached Corsicana of the death of Mrs J W Holsey at Corsicana Texas. She was the wife of Mr Wilbur Holsey a native of Butler who moved to Texas many years ago and became a civic leader and businessman in Corsicana. Mrs Holsey was 60 years old and died from influenza pneumonia.

Local Team Prepares for Wiregrass Basketball Tourney

The Third District Tournament begins today in Ashburn at 3 30 p m with 18 teams vying for the district cup. First round matchups include Dawson versus Weston, Byromville against Fitzgerald, and Leesburg facing Cordele. Semifinals set for Saturday morning and the final Saturday night. Winners advance to Athens to compete for the State Championship. Vienna may defend its title. Checks for Confederate veterans distributed by Judge Peed

Checks of 25 dollars each are being distributed this week by Judge L T Peed to Confederate veterans of Taylor county. These are half the amount due under the old pension law for the first quarter of 1930 ending March 31. None have refused the checks and some had been advised to protest, but took them as half of their annual pension whether 40 or 20. The 1929 pension law raising monthly pensions was declared invalid by the state attorney general.

Notorious burglar gets twenty years in Georgia pen

L H Anderson, an escapee and feared Georgia robber, pleaded guilty in Bible Superior court to the Macon merchant robbery of January 2. He received twenty more years added to a prior 45 year term. Narvin Jolly also pleaded guilty and drew a similar sentence. Anderson, sought on multiple county charges, escaped from a Meriwether chain gang in December and terrorized guards during his confinement. He faced further charges for robberies in Posey and Drei zin stores near Butler and other local crimes.

Permanent pastures seed offer to farmers in Taylor County

County Agent announces stock of carpet grass and lespedeza seed, 60 to 100 pounds each, for permanent pastures. Seed sowing at 10 pounds per acre, with sun exposure and minimal prep. Costs 15 cents per pound for carpet grass and 5 cents per pound for lespedeza plus freight. Shipments to farmers and milk-route customers will continue. over two pounds purchased to date.

Building Moved From Bateman and Colbert Mill Site

The large two story frame building once housing the Bateman and Colbert mill on White Water creek, eight miles south of Butler, is being taken down and moved to Beaver creek and highway three two miles north of Butler. Mr S Peebles will set up a grist mill using backwater power from Beaver creek. A history dating to 1859 notes the mill’s Civil War era prominence in the region.

Mrs McMurry Freed In Husband Death Trial

In Columbus Georgia a Superior court jury acquitted Lillian McMurry of murdering her husband R C McMurry who died from scalding at Columbus in September 1926. The case was tried after she had been deemed insane in a previous 1926 trial and later deemed sane before this retrial. Dr Went died in a hospital at Marietta hours after the wreck.

Funeral Today for C C Wootell Beloved Macon Citizen

Funeral services will be held at Cordele today for C C Wootell a noted Macon citizen. After signing his will he shot himself in his Wooten Marble Works office at 765 Third Street Tuesday afternoon. He died instantly and will be buried beneath a carved stone slab he made. His will directs two marble pores from a Thir street residence to guard the grave entrance. Wooten moved to Macon in 1917 with the price of chickens and built Wooten Marble Works becoming a prominent stone cutter with valuable property and jewelry recently.

Ragsdale Guilty of Embezzlement in Georgia Case

Zebulon Ga Feb 24 Borden Ragsdale pleaded guilty in Pike county superior court to embezzling 17000 from Griffin Building and Loan Association and was sentenced to seven years in Milledgeville state prison He could face trial on three other indictments as announced by the solicitor general The case moved from Spalding to Zebulon due to jury impaneling issues
