Butler Girls Earned Tournament Honors at Reynolds

At Reynolds last week the 3 D Northern section hosted eight teams with Butler girls defeating Unadilla 33 32 in their first tournament win. Margie Jarrell led Butler with 20 points and Emogene Spillers and Nancy Childs key roles while losing to Oglethorpe 64 32 and to Montezuma 31 30 to finish fourth. Senior Helen Austin missed the event due to illness and Jarrell and Spillers earned national all tournament recognition.

Mrs Jno W Franklin Dies at Oak Hill Ohio

Mrs Carolyn Hart Franklin died after four weeks illness and lived with her husband Jno W Franklin in Ohio. Funeral Tuesday at Junction City Baptist Church with Rev Mines and Rev Hoke Hatcher officiating and interment at Pine Level Cemetery. Survived by husband three children her mother four sisters and four brothers.

Turner County Officers Deny Conspiracy in Liquor Charges

Seven current and former law enforcement officers including Turner County Sheriff Wesley Fiveash and Ashburn Police Chief J D Dorminey were indicted on federal conspiracy to violate liquor laws. The 13 member grand jury alleges a bootlegging ring operating 23 stills with 18 000 gallon capacity across eight Georgia counties from 1949 to 1955.

Butler Wins Northern Division Tourney At Oglethorpe

Butler edge Byron 62 60 in overtime to claim the Northern Division basketball title at Oglethorpe. Aiken led Butler with 21 points while McDaniel topped Byron with 22. In the consolation game Montezuma beat Oglethorpe 63 57 as Kitchens scored 23 for Oglethorpe and Reid 23 for Montezuma.

Mercer University Law Student Grandfather Enrolls as Freshman

J. H. Ratliff, 67, a retired U S Army colonel and grandfather of nine, enrolls as a freshman at Mercer University's Walter F George School of Law in Maton Georgia. He pursued law to gain formal knowledge he used during court martials and believes a law degree is valuable.

The Cancer Drive in Taylor county will begin next week. Hinton Child Fatally Shot by Brother in Play

Mr and Mrs Robert Hinton of Taylor County mourn the death of George Washington Hinton 11 from an accidental shotgun discharge by his five year old brother Clarence while the boys played cowboy. A coroner's inquest ruled the death accidental. Funeral services were held at New Prospect church cemetery with Goddard Funeral Home in charge. Survived by parents seven brothers and five sisters.

Former Talbot County Senator Joins Vandiver as Aide

Former Talbot County Senator Robert H Jordan becomes Lt. Gov Ernest Vandivers aide for the current Georgia Legislature.
