The House Armed Services Committee voted 32 to 0 to extend the draft until June 1959. Leaders planned a House vote, signaling likely passage. Defense Secretary Wilson argued the draft is essential to maintain a 2,850,000 man armed force.

Georgia Power Co announces a $32 million construction program for the year from Macon to Middle and South Georgia. President Harllee Branch Jr says the budget matches last year with 344 miles of new transmission lines and substations planned. Includes lines Warner Robins to Ft Valley and Waynesboro to Statesboro and Millen to Alexander, improving service and adding power to Millen and Alexander.
G. J. Graham 68, retired farmer of Talbotton, died after a short illness in Talbotton hospital. He was born in Webster county and lived in Talbotton most of his life. Surviving are a son G. M. Graham of Talbotton a daughter Mrs. W. B. Spam of Sarasota Florida a grandson Lt George Graham Jr of Fort Campbell Kentucky a granddaughter Mrs. Ralph Colbert of Jacksonville and three great grandchildren.
Internal Revenue Service representatives will be at the Post Office in Butler on March 2 from 1 30 to 5 pm to provide advice or assistance to federal income tax payers at no charge. Carl Hobbs. PW.
Ft Valley churches plan major expansions as two large congregations grow, with Ft Valley Baptist adding a $10,000 educational building including multiple classrooms and facilities, due this fall, and Ft Valley Methodist nearing completion on a $73,000 annex to include chapel, kitchen, social hall, and offices.
Cecil Blackwell of the University of Georgia Extension will discuss vegetable gardening practices including ground preparation fertilization and cultivation. The talk begins at 2 30 p m Tuesday in the Sunday School annex of the local Methodist church with invitation to all interested gardeners from Ann Smith Home Demonstration Agent.
A Friday 6 30 p m motorcade will form on the west side of the courthouse to attend the Butler Reynolds boys tournament final at Oglethorpe. The Butler game starts at 7 30 p m. Decorate cars in school colors and boost the team.

Charlie L. Funderburk died Friday morning at Columbus hospital after months of illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cuthbert Methodist Church. Interment followed at Camp Ground Cemetery near Butler. He was born in Taylor county to the late James and Nettie Grace Funderburk and is survived by his wife Mamie Parker, two sons, two daughters, and a half brother E. E. Heath of Butler. He was a prominent barber in Taylor and Talbot counties before moving to Cuthbert.
Taylor County women delegates join District Home Demonstration Council in Perry for annual meeting. Delegates include Mrs. Calvin Jarrell Mrs. Jack Peed from Central Club Mrs. R. D. Waller Mrs. E. H. Morrison of Mauk Club Mrs. Paul Montgomery and a Crowell Club delegate with Rupert and Miss Ann Smith as alternates. Highlights cover 1954 achievements 1955 plans scrapbooks and yearbooks nominations and a group theme. A noon covered dish luncheon and social hour are planned.
More than 250 000 Georgians have heart and blood vessel disease spurring the 1955 February fund drive. W M Mitchell and C S Motz of Atlanta lead the effort for 185 000 dollars. General Mark Clark chairs the national campaign. Gov Marvin Griffin proclaims February Heart Month.
Taylor county relatives and friends mourn the death of C A Bonner in a fatal highway crash near LaGrange Saturday night. Bonner’s funeral was held Monday at 4 p m in Hogansville. The Highway Patrol cited high speed and a loss of control as the crash cause.
Mrs. Florence Jones former Butler resident dies in Atlanta after long illness. Funeral services were held at Spring Hill Atlanta with Rev. Earl Anderson and others, then burial in Butler. She was born in Houston County September 1831 and lived in Butler before moving to Atlanta thirty years ago. Survived by daughter Leah Jones son Rev Ashton Jones and grandson A B Jones Jr.
Atlanta February 7 The General Assembly enters the last two weeks of the current session with Gov Griffin's program moving toward final passage. A tag bill conference will decide on sale of car tags in county courthouses and potential revenue sharing. The rural roads authority and a state finance study panel have been approved. two major bills not sponsored by Griffin await early Senate action.
