The Bastille functioned as a fashionable retreat for those linked to the king where prisoners enjoyed fine meals, wardrobes, pets, and rooms of elegance. Influential lettres de cachet sent people there, while thinkers and socialites mingled inside its walls.
Butler High School seniors stage a Friday night 7 30 performance titled Lighthouse Nan with a humorous plot including Nan and a live hen. Proceeds fund the group’s trip to New York next summer. admission 10c 15c and Be pub officer indicates.
Crowell school will present Are You A Mason Saturday night Dec 17 at 7 30 o’clock Admission 10c and 20c. The play follows Amos Bloodgood and his son in law Frank Perry who pretend to be Masons to fool their wives and enjoy bridge. A real Mason enters the scene leading to a string of narrow escapes.
Reynolds Woman's Club marked its 25th anniversary with a December luncheon at the club house attended by about seventy five members and guests. Guests included state president Mrs. Albert M. Hill and district president Mrs. Maxwell Murray, with former Reynolds chapter president Mrs. R. A. Hicks among others.
Arrangements are complete for the Thomaston Production Credit Association annual meeting on January 11 1909 at the courthouse Thomaston at 930 am Farmers from Taylor Upson Lamar and Monroe counties are invited The association serves members with short term credit and other purposes It has 450 members and will report last year operations elect directors and plan 1939 activities Hiram L Gardner of the Production Credit Corporation of Columbia will address stockholders after the business session.
Members of Fickling Masonic Lodge elected new officers for the coming year at their regular meeting. T. F. Tante was chosen Worshipful Master with B. H. Bazemore Sr. Warden J. M. Austin Jr. Warden Herman Amos treasurer C. B. Bankston Sr. Deacon Hamp Riley Jr. Deacon Wilson Jarrell Sr. Steward H. C. Bond Jr. Steward W. W. Douglas Tyler C. F. Benns Chaplain. The lodge plans its annual St John Festival at the Masonic hall on Tuesday night December 27.
The Rev Hendry F Jelks longtime pastor of Reynolds Baptist Church will move to Venice Florida after Christmas to lead the First Baptist Church there. He is a Mercer 1925 graduate from Hawkinsville and has served at Una dilla Pinehurst and Reynolds. Mrs Jelks and two daughters will accompany him with daughters remaining in Atlanta and Reynolds. He has assisted Dr B D Ragadale Georgia Baptist histories secretary for 15 years and no Reynolds pastor has been named yet.
County Agent W F Bembry directs high school boys to demonstrate pine seedling planting on land owned by Butler Naval Stores Company just north of town. The event runs all day Saturday December 17 with visitors welcome and a stand of slash pines from 1986.
In Taylor County Georgia on Saturday 748 farmers voted in favor of the Agriculture Adjustment Administration cotton control program for 1939 while 97 voted against. Georgia total ballots were 86 944 for and 23 762 against with 184 counties participating in cotton voting.
Atlanta Dec 14 A plea to probation the sentence of Melvin Handley Macon youth convicted of involuntary manslaughter was declined by the state executive department Handley was convicted for running over and killing Jack Windham in Butler Taylor County July 3 The hearing before Governor Rivers was conducted by executive secretary Downing Musgrove with Solicitor General Hubert Calhoun for the state The case drew attention in Taylor County as a motion for new trial remained pend ing in the Taylor County court before Judge C F McLaughlin and before Handley had served any sentence The defendant faced trial for murder with an automobile at the October Taylor term in Butler The Windham family son Jack was killed and another son injured in the same incident Other Macon youths were said to be in the car with Handley
The Butler Methodist Church Men's Bible Class elected officers for the coming year. Ed McCorvey becomes President, A J Gill is Vice-President, T E Joiner sec treas, with H Glaze as assistant secretary and treasurer. Next Sunday morning December 18 Mr J S Green of the Local Baptist Sunday School will speak to the class. all are invited.
Rev H B Shepherd of Mercer University will preach at Antioch church in the morning and evening hours next Sunday December 18. He is described as a capable young preacher and will bring a message to the congregation at each service. The public is invited to attend and hear him on his visit. An important church business meeting will follow the morning service.
State fiscal officers are checking to ensure teachers receive their pay by December 20 before Christmas. State Superintendent M. D. Collins notes many teachers plan to go home or shop for gifts and require money in time. The delay in November was due to $1.4 million not being found, with promises to pay by ad valorem tax collection. The Auditing Department confirms the promise, while the Revenue Department urges counties to remit taxes early to help meet the December payment.
The post office urges shoppers to mail Christmas packages early under its Shop and Mail Early campaign. Banks also move up Christmas Savings distributions to let depositors shop sooner. Delays arise from last minute mail, so start mailing at least ten days before Christmas and mark items Not to be opened until Christmas.
The schools in Taylor county will close Friday afternoon for Christmas holidays and reopen Monday morning, Jan. 1. Teachers from outside the county will leave Saturday to spend the holidays with relatives and friends. Several local college students have already arrived to spend the holidays with their parents. others will arrive over the weekend.

Clarence Wooten operator of Wooten's Fish Camp was freed on a murder charge in a commitment trial on grounds of justifiable homicide. The shooting occurred Dec 2 at Wooten's hospital area. Trial featured Justice of the Peace bench and defense motion to dismiss citing self defense, but the court kept the case for further inquiry.
Due to a flood of children's letters to Santa Claus, the Herald will publish only part in this issue with remaining letters to appear in the Dec 22 edition. Names of writers will be listed next week so no child is forgotten on Christmas Eve.
Sunday the last preaching and services for the year will be held at Butler Methodist church. Special Christmas programs will be observed. The public is invited to attend Sunday school and morning and evening worship services.
