R. B. Russell Georgia Chief Justice Dies

Atlanta veteran jurist Judge Richard Brevard Russell chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court died at his home near Winder in his 78th year. He collapsed while conversing with his wife after returning from Atlanta. He was father of U S Senator Richard B Russell Jr and left a legacy as an orator and leader in law and state affairs.

Taylor Co Farmers to Vote on Cotton Quotas Saturday

Taylor County cotton farmers vote on marketing quotas for 1939. Voting runs Dec 10 from 9 am to 6 pm under AAA county committee oversight. Eligible voters include those who produced cotton in 1938 with staple under 1.5 inches, excluding Sea Island cotton unless combined with eligible cotton. Ballots counted publicly at each polling place. two thirds of total votes needed for quotas to take effect. Senator-Elect Dudley Taunton fatally shot at Wooten Fish Camp

State Senator elect Dudley Taunton, 28, died in Montgomery hospital after a shotgun wound to the abdomen at Wooten Fish Camp in Upson County. Clarence Wooten, owner of the camp, was arrested for murder claiming self defense. Taunton, born in Taylor County and a former representative, was returning to Butler when wounded Friday night. Funeral services were held at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with a large turnout from across the state. Survivors include his mother, sister, grandmother, and several aunts and uncles.

Hon E C Perkins Celebrates 88th Birthday At Family Reunion

Hon E C Perkins known as Uncle Gene celebrated his 88th birthday with a family reunion at his Butler area home last Sunday. He has long been a prominent cattle raiser and land owner with holdings along the Flint river. Out of town guests included Miss Emily Perkins of Jacksonville, Fla. Miss Irene Perkins of Columbus and Miss Virginia Perkins of LaGrange.

Singing At Rupert Sunday Afternoon

The regular Sunday afternoon song service will be held at Rupert on December 11. Last month’s attendees compared the Rupert singings to a district convention, promising an enjoyable afternoon. This will be the Christmas celebration and all singers are asked to bring their best selections and arrange any specials. The public is cordially invited.

Cochran Seeks Georgia State Senate Seat in 23rd District

A vacancy in Georgia's Twenty-third District Senate due to Dudley Taunton's death prompts Mr. J. T. Cochran to run. Friends urge him, highlighting his farming, market operations, banking role as Butler vice president, and civic leadership as reasons he can serve the district. Mrs Wilbur Green Undergoes Major Operation

Mrs Wilbur Green of near Ideal was admitted to Adams hospital in Montezuma for a major operation yesterday. Surgeons report she is resting as well as expected. The illness of her daughter prompted Mr E F Bone to travel from Green DC to Mrs Green's room Tuesday night for support and care.

Handley clemency hearing set after trial denial

Melvin Handley, a Macon youth convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the July crash that killed Jack Windham of Butler, faced a clemency hearing after Judge McCaughlin denied a motion for a new trial. Governor Rivers summoned Handley to Columbus for the proceedings at 10 o clock this morning.

Lighthouse Nan to Be Presented by Butler High Seniors

Butler High school's senior class presents the three act comedy Lighthouse Nan in the school auditorium on Friday night December 16 at 7 30. The cast includes Nan played by Width Monroe and characters such as John Enlow president of Seacoast Banking William Adams Moll Buzzer Dorothy Bazemore Hortense Enlow and Arthur Choke among others. The public is invited to attend and support the students as they prepare to travel to New York this summer.
