Body of Private Thomas O. Gassett Home For Burial

The body of Private Thomas O. Gassett killed in action in Belgium January 2, 1945 will arrive in Butler Friday morning December 10 at five o clock. He was born March 19, 1919 in Taylor County and enlisted in the Army from Thomas County serving two years overseas. A military funeral with local Veterans of Foreign Wars members will be held at Daviston Cemetery near Shiloh Church. Rev. J. W. M. Stipe to officiate.

Worship Services at Mauk and Howard Churches Sunday

Sunday worship at Mauk Church 10 a m with Sunday School afterward. Howard Church offers 11:30 a m and 7:30 p m services with Sunday School at 10:30 a m. Dawson Ga December 2 A service record book compiled by the local post of the VFW has been printed and is on sale. The Terrell county history features photos of veterans who served overseas and local wartime scenes. editors include Mr and Mrs Charles Iller Walter Mathis Geise Dozier and Mrs Edwin Skelton. More than one hundred copies have been sold.

Pace Saves Much Proposed Cut In Peanut Acreage

Americus Georgia November 4 Congressman Stephen Pace states after a talk with the Secretary of Agriculture that the 1949 peanut acreage cut will be limited to 20 percent of the five year average 1943-1947 rather than the proposed 35 percent and clarifies 22 percent reports. Georgia’s allotment is about 882000 acres from a national 2611365 acre limit.

Macon Youth Dies in Accidental Rifle Shooting

Harris E Mixon 18 of Macon Route 4 died from a rifle wound at Rainbow Drive In Restaurant. The gun, fired accidentally while two companions cleaned a 22 rifle, struck Mixon as he stood outside the truck after traveling from Lizella with holly for sale. He died at a Macon hospital.

Bishop Moore Re-elected Leader of Missions Board

In Buck Hill Falls Pennsylvania on December 6 Bishop Arthur J. Moore of Atlanta was reelected president of the Methodist board of missions and church extensions. The group, ahead of four days of sessions, includes the women’s division of Christian Service, 1,600,000 members, and the divisions of home and foreign missions plus education and cultivation. Mrs F G Brooks of Mt Vernon Iowa was elected president of the women’s division.

Walton County Girl Banks $3000 in Profits From Cattle

Monroe Ga December news highlights Annie George Garret a 12 year old with $3000 to $4000 in cattle profits. She owns 14 Black Angus cattle a flock of chickens and a 19 month old bull Jack. H M Arnold of Farmers Bank supported her with a $100 loan and later gifted two $10 bills as winnings.

Mallard's Widow Names W. L. Howell In Slaying

Lyons December 6 Amy Mallard a Negro woman signed a warrant charging a white man with murder in the ambush slaying of her husband and said she would travel to Atlanta to tell Gov. Herman Talmadge her story. Savannah attorney Aaron Kravitch said she would visit the governor Wednesday. He noted she acts on advice of unidentified Negro friends in Atlanta. The widow, under police protection, returned to Lyons and named W. L. Howell a 32 year old farmer as part of the group that stopped the Mallard car on November 20 and fired on her husband Robert. She said Howell did not fire the fatal shot but was in the party.

Twiggs County Grand Jury No Bills Bailey Indicted

Twiggs county grand jury returned a no bill in the case charging A C Bailey with assault with intent to murder. The warrant was sworn by E C Holland who said Bailey threatened to kill him with a rifle and struck him. Plans are to present another case against Bailey to Bibb county grand jury.

Mercer Wesleyan Receive Shares From Hinkle Estate

Macon Georgia institutions Mercer University and Wesleyan College share thirty five thousand ninety three dollars and sixty three cents from the estate of the late E E Hinkle of Westport Connecticut Stevens Institute of Technology is also a beneficiary. Wesleyan sets up the Laura Ellen Butts Hinkle Memorial Scholarship Fund for juniors and seniors.

Postal workers anticipate a surge of Christmas greeting cards and packages, with mail expected to flood the system by Saturday or early next week. Officials warn out of state deliveries should mail by week’s end to arrive before Christmas. later postings may delay delivery.

Talbot Negro Dies Under Atlanta Train

In Atlanta on December 3 a Talbotton man, J. W. Freeman, was crushed to death between two runaway railroad cars on an incline. Engineer J. H. Patrick chased the rolling units but could not stop them. One unit later struck a Waycross bound Coast Line passenger engine before the passenger train continued to Waycross after a replacement engine was added.

Car Jumps Road Killing Bride Seriously Hurt

Savannah dispatch reports Ray J. Findley 29 formerly with the Savannah Morning News circulation and his bride L B Findley 23 killed and badly hurt respectively when their car plunged from the coastal highway south of Brunswick about 200 yards toward Jacksonville. Mrs Findley was taken to City hospital in Brunswick in very bad but not critical condition. The couple had been visiting Savannah and were en route to Jacksonville where Findley had worked with the Jacksonville Journal for a month.

Court of Honor Meeting for Scouts in Columbus

The Georgia Alabama Council based in Columbus supports Troop No. 33 with executives and an office staff. Volunteers work with local Boy Scout and Cub Scout groups to build character and provide programs. A financial canvass will be conducted Friday to support operations and expenses.

State Cancels Over $5 Million Road Contracts

Director James Gilis told the Highway board that 89 road contracts totaling more than 5 million dollars have been canceled since Gov. Talmadge took office. He noted 64 state projects with bids totaling $4,755,382 were canceled after September bids and certified checks returned due to unavailable funds.
