Charles M. Wadsworth Dies in Columbus. Rites Held at Mullway Baptist

The funeral for Charles M. Wadsworth, 63, formerly of this county, was held at Mullway Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. JM Wilson and Rev. M T Gaultney officiated. Survivors include wife Franie Byrd, daughters Gladys Garrett Lucile Garrett Birdie Hancock and Mrs Tom Dean, and brother Arthur Wadsworth. He died December 8 at his Columbus home after a weeklong illness. Pallbearers were Columbus men James Imam Roy Isom Floyd Isom Oscar Dunn James Smith and Thomas Smith.

One of the heaviest snows in years fell last night across the section. Residents awoke to a pretty scene and enjoyed snowballing and other amusements. Temperatures were mild for the pastime and winds were light.

Georgia beer tax measure is approved

Atlanta December 6 The Georgia Legislature approved a bill doubling the beer tax in the extra session with an 84 to 12 Senate vote after House approval. Governor Rivers urged passage as debate grew heated. The measure now moves to the governor for signature.

Fire at Riley Home Extinguished Before Heavy Damage

A fire threatened the home of Hon and Mrs H Riley near the Methodist church around 10 am Monday. The blaze started between the ceiling by an overheated stove and filled rooms with smoke before city employees using the fire truck arrived and extinguished it, preventing serious damage.

Rites Planned Sunday for Mr H Paul Byrd in Macon

News of the passing of Mr. H Paul Byrd came as sorrow to relatives in the county. Byrd died Friday in Macon after a several week illness. He was born near Reynolds August 27 1968 and had worked in the Central of Georgia Railway car department in Macon for 15 years. Funeral services at Hart's Mortuary were conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. with interment in Macon Memorial Park. Pallbearers included Lester Clarence Charles Edgar William Horton and G C Kirksey. honorary pallbearers listed. His family and friends attended despite heavy rain. He was a faithful member of the Methodist church.

Semi-Annual Recital At Butler High School

The St. Cecilian and MacDowell Music Clubs present the semi annual recital on Wednesday evening December 15 at 7 30 in the science room and music studio to be heated instead of the auditorium. Part I features a Christmas season interpretation by Grammar School pupils and a later Part II offers more advanced numbers by High School students. A joint meeting follows on Thursday December 16 at 2 30 honoring Edward MacDowell with a short Christmas program.

Winter Weather Grips Community With Severe Cold

Local residents faced one of the severest cold snaps in years as temperatures dipped between six and twelve noon to around 16 degrees with a slow rise yet staying below freezing overnight. A prior storm dumped rain Sunday night into Monday, followed by NW winds, a light snow flurry, and a heavy freeze. The thermometer rose above freezing by Wednesday as clouds persisted and more precipitation was forecast for Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Wallace Dies in Atlanta After Illness

William W Wallace longtime Southern Railroad conductor died at his Atlanta home Tuesday morning after a brief illness. He previously lived in Butler where he married Jewel Windham and rose to prominence in railroad circles. He was survived by his wife and several children with funeral rites held yesterday in Butler.

Mrs Frank Ellis Recovering After Two Operations

Mrs Frank Ellis, patient at Petrie hospital in Murphy, underwent a second major operation Monday and then contracted mumps.
