Dudley Glass recalls his early journalistic days under a tiny, frequent drinker boss. The overweight editor supposedly lived on rye liquor, sipped “straight bombers” hourly, and kept a six shooter on his desk. He drifted to the Southern Turf for drinking. the author notes the oddity of his routine.
During Bobby Breen's film run at the Dean Theatre on December 9 and 10 a wishing well in the lobby invites donations of shoes clothes food and toys for the community's needy. A committee of Methodist and Baptist church ladies will supervise purchases and distribution to maximize child welfare.
Properties of Mr. W A Payne will be sold at auction Friday and Saturday of this week. The sale includes Georgia farm lands, business and residential lots, all well located. Pierce Collins Auction Co conducts the sale with Dan Caseball handling details. A barbecue dinner will be served to attendees. The firm is noted for getting things done, and locals with property to sell are urged to consult them.
The Reynolds Baptist Church will present a Christmas Pageant at the church Thursday December 28 at 7 o clock p m The public is invited to attend H F Jelks Pastor and Mr Robert Blythe a well known Junction City citizen was reported yesterday to be in serious condition after an attack Monday night of apoplexy He had a prior similar attack about a year ago and has since largely remained at home
A Howard celebration honored Mr. E H Perkins for 25 years with the postal service. Mrs. Perkins and daughters hosted Taylor County rural letter carriers with a four course feast and hand painted miniature mail box place cards. Virginia Perkins attended from La Grange College as a guest, and toasts praised mail carriers past and present, thanking the service and community.
Following a several month illness Alberta Watts McCants wife of Rev K C McCants prominent Primitive Baptist minister dies Wednesday night at 7. She is survived by her husband three children and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon.
Mr J D Nash formerly Butler high school faculty member now with Soil Conservation Program as County Performance Supervisor is in Taylor county working with County Agent W F Bembry on aerial maps received last week. Maps show 10 acres per square inch from 15000 feet giving easy view of land in or idle cultivation. Taylor maps made fall 1987 cost about $1000 and will aid government crop allotments in 1988. Harry Fussell will arrive next week to help count y agents and committee men in evaluating eligibility for conservation payments.
Americus Ga Nov 29 Mrs James Yates of Macon died Monday afternoon from critical injuries after the car she rode in turned over five times on the Americus Albany highway about four miles from Americus. Mrs E G Speer of Macon sister of Mrs Ed Childres of Americus was in the car and injured with a back injury. State highway patrolmen said loss of control after a curve caused the crash. Passersby moved the women to a clinic where Mrs Yates died. The Buick sedan was badly damaged with the driver door torn off and the windshield shattered.
Children wishing to have their Santa letters published in the Herald must submit them to the office by Friday December 10. Letters will appear in a Special Edition on December 16. There is no charge for printing. the only requirement is delivery by the deadline.
Two year old Little Vance Childers, son of Mr and Mrs A B Childers, broke his right arm Tuesday afternoon after tumbling from an open door at the family home two miles south of town.
On November 23 while moving a family from Charlie Ingram's place near Reynolds to a house on L. T. Peed's farm near Butler a bundle of bed clothing with six pillows was lost off the wagon track. Finder to notify Walter Davis in Butler for a reward.
News arrives of the death of Mrs. E. M. Starling of Talbotton who died last night in Thomaston after several weeks illness. She was the sister of Mrs. E. H. Bazemore of this city.
Atlanta November 30 Administration leaders won a legislative victory as the Georgia House approved a bill nearly doubling the beer tax 120 to 61. The measure, effective until June 30 1989, would raise an estimated 1 to 1.25 million annually, with the Senate to act. The session also criticized some Georgia congressional members for opposing agricultural benefits.
The Alrich Electric Company under H. R. Anderson will lay about fifty miles of Rural Electric Lines in southern Taylor County serving around 100 rural families. Poles are up and wire stringing starts this week with power expected in the first miles by Christmas and the full line by January first.
Up to date 584 families applied to the Welfare Department for old age aid aid to the blind aid for dependent children or general relief. Of these 465 seek old age assistance 63 dependent children 8 aid to the blind and the rest for WPA CCC NYA or general relief. There have been 96 awards totaling 705 dollars with 52 to whites and 44 to negroes. Most cases be finished by May with June investigations starting Jan 1 next. Marie Barrow Director.
The local American Legion post plans a regular meeting at the Butler court house on Tuesday night December 7 at seven o'clock. All ex servicemen are urged to attend.
L. H. Shorty Anderson, a Black man about 40, suspected of burglary and a long convict record, was re captured after hiding in Butler. He robbed Posey Hardware with an automatic shotgun and rifles worth about 150 dollars, then fled toward Columbus where stolen goods were found. Anderson, who has moved through many camps across the state, says he will continue to cause trouble unless courts release him. He escaped from the Onat hou n county camp recently and is now held in Muscoget county jail awaiting removal by state prison authorities.
Taylor county voters in Butler Reynolds and Wesley districts selected four men each to serve as county committeemen for the 1938 farm program. Butler picks Herbert Wilbur A B Shehee Ale Callahan and Z R McCorkle. Reynolds picks T L Ruffin Gann Nelson George Z Young and Alfonzo McCrary. Wesley picks Murray Jarrell J T Cochran Walter Willis and Bentley Adams.
The Taylor County Education Association will meet next Saturday December 4 at ten oclock in the Butler school auditorium. The agenda includes the Constitution and By-Laws report adoption if advisable, a short musical program by Mrs. E P Hodges music class, and at 1030 a.m. Dr M D Collins State School Superintendent will deliver a message.
Funeral services were held for Cabaniss Averett Bryant a former Talbotton business man at Patterson's chapel in Atlanta with interment at Perry. He died Monday night in Charlotte after a lengthy operation. He had worked for Wooford Oil Co in Atlanta and lived in Charlotte two years. He was born in Talbotton on September 21, 1902 and is survived by his wife former Miss Heanor Roberts of College Park mother Mrs Lynda Lee Bryant of Atlanta a sister in Atlanta a brother in Atlanta four aunts one niece two uncles and two cousins.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Smith widow of Emanuel Smith died this morning at her home in this city after a heart attack on Wednesday. She was about 70, born in Antioch community and connected with Antioch church since childhood. Funeral at Antioch church tomorrow at 11 oclock conducted by Rev. R. C. Howard. interment in Antioch cemetery. Survived by three children Mrs. W. A. Jarrell Miss Effie Smith and Mr. Mercer Smith a brother Mr. John Walker and three sisters Mrs. A. T. Jarrell Mrs. Carrie Layfield and Mrs. Annie Jarrell.
Mrs Clyde Halley wife of Clyde Halley died in Tazewell after a five day pneumonia illness. She was once Miss Mattie Lee McElmurray of Buena Vista and a Buena Vista High School graduate of 1929. Survived by husband Elaine daughter, parents Mir and Mrs Sim McKimurray, two sisters Verna Smith and Henry Halley, and a brother Mereimurray. Funeral Friday at residence conducted by Rev J W Lilly and Rev Vincent. Interment in Tazewell Cemetery.
