First Century Macon County Centenary Begun in Georgia

Oglethorpe Ga December 11 a dinner of Macon county products in Montezuma opened the centennial celebration of Macon county observed throughout the county this month. incidents in the county's creation on December 17 1887 from parts of Houston and Marion counties are to be depicted in pageants and programs. Lanier was chosen as the first county seat on the Flint river between Tazewell Columbus Perry and Macon.

Shows for Week at Dean Theatre

Dean Theatre schedules a week of films with Bing Crosby in Double or Nothing on Sunday and Monday. The Devil Is Driving stars Richard Dix on Tuesday and Wednesday. Checks on Beer Stock After Georgia Tax Increase

Checks are being made on beer stocks on hand at the time of signing a Georgia law increasing the tax. The added levies are not yet collected but will be assessed from the stock on hand at the start of the current week. Revenue officials sent advices to collectors and sheriffs outlining the procedure last week.

An early morning blaze at the home of Mrs. Clara Cameron Sunday was extinguished with no structural damage but the fire consumed a dress she had just finished sewing from costly material. Smoke filled the room as flames spread, posing serious risk.

Taxi Cab Slaying in Columbus Clouds Mystery

Columbus Georgia December 12 officers and detectives investigate a fatal gun duel that killed 24 year old Columbus Dime taxi driver Alston M Bush Jr. near his taxi on Third Avenue near Twentieth Street. Bush lay in a pool of blood with a single pistol near his hand and seven bullets fired into the cab.

Local Girl Loses Valuables to Robbers

Miss Doris Williamson, nurse at Dr. Lloyd McRae’s Atlanta office, was robbed during a hospital operation. Jewelry and cash totaling about $200 vanished from a cabinet drawer as she assisted in the procedure. No suspects or stolen items have been recovered.

Citizens in Taylor County and statewide enjoyed a Butler male quartet program Sunday morning on WMAZ Macon. The quartet featured John M. Cox first tenor Fred C. Austin second tenor Aurelius E. Locke baritone and Garvis D. Locke bass with piano accompaniment by Miss Evelyn Hortman.

Exploding Firecracker Injures Boy in Summer Accident

An eight year old boy, Alton Heath, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Heath, sustained painful injuries to three fingers of his right hand from an exploding firecracker Saturday. He received prompt medical care and is improving nicely.

Modern Canning Plant to Open in Marshallville

Announcement from the Macon County Citizen reports plans for Marshallville to host a large canning plant serving Macon Peach and Taylor counties. The Marshallville Canning Company, chartered recently, will begin operations with the 1988 asparagus crop with Harris Richard as vice president and plan manager.

Death of Joe M. Frederick at Oglethorpe

Joe M. Frederick 65 died at home in Oglethorpe after a long illness. He was a respected Macon County citizen. Survived by his wife two daughters stepmother Mrs M A Chapman sister Mrs J D Owens and another sister. Funeral held Thursday in Oglethorpe with Presiding Elder H L Boyd officiating and other local ministers assisting.

Miss Ida Munro Dies at 82 A Renowned Teacher

Miss Ida Munro 82 a leading educator in Marion County died at her Putnam home after a lengthy illness. A devoted teacher she educated at Buena Vista LaGrange Academy Pabody College Georgia College for Girls Central College for Women and taught in Norfolk before retiring to care for her father. Her nephew H S Munro former Taylor County administrator recently moved with his family from Butler to Putnam.
