The city enjoys brilliantly lighted Christmas trees and holiday decor with praise for Chief of Police J D Cook. Residents are urged to repair and donate discarded toys for needy children and to participate in community events including open houses and church programs around Dec. 4 17.
The Butler Lions Club added $60 to the High School Band fund from a Monday night basketball game at the School Gym. The Vagabond Kings defeated a Taylor county team 85 to 75, with local thanks to Mack Marchman for arranging the visiting squad and to Butler Reynolds and other county players.
Future homemakers in the Chat tahoochee Valley seek the State Homemaker degree by writing autobiographies detailing projects homes families and community service. The Taylor County Home Demonstration Council sponsors a cake sale on Thursday December 22 starting at 1 p m in the county courthouse. Japanese fruit cakes and other layer cakes will be sold to raise funds for 4 H and HD Club projects countywide.

After a nine week illness, William Melton Harris died at 7 30 p m Sunday at his Whitewater home seven miles south of town He was born September 20 1868 in Crawford County son of Jackson Harris He married Mary McDaniel 65 years ago and leaves four sons Eugene William Albert Zebedee and Samuel four daughters Ruth Hurt Oudig Albritton and Evelyn Green Funeral services were held Tuesday at Mt Pisgah Baptist Church and cemetery with Rev Mobley Cross Edwards Funeral Home in charge
Hamilton Ga The Sub District Laymen's organization of the Methodist Church will meet Saturday at the Hamilton church with a supper at 730 p m served by the Hamilton WSCS. Jack Buchanan Woodland is program chairman and Frank Riley Butler is chairman. The gathering includes pastors urged to attend with laymen and lay women.
1954 retail sales in Taylor County from 91 stores totaled 3.999 million dollars, a 27.8 percent rise from 1948 when 99 stores sold 3.128 million. Payroll data show 39 payroll stores with 133 employees, and November 1954 payroll amounted to 230 thousand dollars for sales of 3.369 million. Proprietors of unincorporated business numbered 91.

J Thomas Childres of Butler dies at Montgomery hospital after a short illness due to complications. Born June 30 1889 in Butler he was a builder and contractor and a Bethel Primitive Baptist Church member. Survived by wife Minnie Pearl Giles Childres four children four brothers several sisters. funeral held at Bethel church with Elder M A Hall officiating and Edwards Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. R. T. Hardy of Chicago, en route to Orlando, Fla., recalls the kindness he received two years ago at the Butler hospital where asthma treatment was given. He drove about 400 miles recently while suffering a new attack to renew ties with staff and friends and to occupy the same hospital room and bed he once used.
Governor Marvin Griffin will speak at the dedication of Roberta Manufacturing Company today with Crawford County Development Co official R Sheets listing attendees from Acme Life Insurance, the Department of Commerce, the Singer Sewing Machine Co, Reece Corp and several Macon and Fort Valley organizations among guests.
Cotton growers vote Tuesday to decide if marketing quotas will govern the 1956 crop. A two thirds vote in the referendum would place allotments and price supports at 75 to 90 percent of parity for the quota period and 50 percent for eligible growers. Polls open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at City Hall Reynolds and several local polling sites including Butler and Montgomery stores.
The Butler Baptist Church presents a Christmas music program on Wednesday evening December 21 at 7 30 in the sanctuary. The U S Fish and Wildlife Service delivered 11 500 blue gill bream to Soil Conservation cooperators this week. Cooperators Ron Cooper Tim Hartman Marvin and Jack Peed and Clinton Clark received 3000 3000 500 bream respectively. Large mouth bass will be delivered next spring to finish pond stock. Ponds built in the county total 52 and provide water for livestock irrigation flood control and drought storage.
Mr. H. E. Allen, a city hardware merchant, suffered head and chest injuries when his station wagon collided with a six passenger car carrying six Negro youths after a brass band parade. Allen was unconscious at hospital. six others sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to leg injuries. The other vehicle was driven by Johnnie Short Durham, son of George Durham, who was jailed on an open charge and will face further hearing.
Taylor County commissioners announce completion of a new concrete barracks at the Public Works Camp near Butler. The 34 by 86 foot reinforced building houses 45 prisoners and replaces two old wooden structures. Prison labor built it at about half current prices. The camp, under County Warden G C Robertson, will relocate 30 colored prisoners this week. kitchen and dining hall also concrete and reinforced with steel. Board members are E H Bazemore chair, Walter Wainwright, Lewis Watson, clerk Emory Harris.
