Deferrals for Married Men and Farmers Under Peace-Time Draft

President Truman issued a 30 page set of draft regulations deferring married men farmers and many with dependents from the 21 month peace time draft. The plan speeds up induction by sending classification questionnaires to eligible 16 through 25 year olds registering August 30 to September 18.

Beloved Dawson Librarian Retires After Many Years

In Dawson the Dawson Carnegie Library appoints Mrs. Calvin Schramm formerly Miss Pat Turner as librarian succeeding Miss Fannie Cheatham whose health limits duties. An honor student from Terrell High School class of 1947 she was active in scholastic activities and edited the annual. July weather was unusually hot with higher temperatures and more rain than in the past five years.

Rail Trip to Coast In 1843 Recounted As Trip for Rich Only

A Macon historical note recalls the Centre of Georgia Railway first advertising passenger service in 1843. The trip from Macon to Savannah was 18.742 miles, cheaper today but longer then, with a McCall's Mill terminus and a lake dam built by the railroad. 1843 fares were under five cents per mile, and the journey took about 12 hours versus 3.5 hours now on Nancy Hanks II.
