Georgia voters aiming for the September 8 Democratic primary should file absentee applications by August 28. Attorney General Eugene Cook and Secretary of State Ben Fortson explain that voters must notify a county registrar 10 to 60 days before the election, be deemed eligible, and receive a ballot at least nine days before voting day.

Rev W H Emerson Dies Suddenly Former Minister
Reverend W H Emerson died at his home eight miles south of Butler after a long illness. Born March 26 1875 in Taylor County he spent most of his life in the county and served as a minister in the Free Will Baptist faith. He baptized many and performed numerous marriages while active in Sunday School work. He joined the Masonic order as a young man and belonged to Fickling Lodge No 129 Butler. He outlived his wife and lived with his daughter Bessie Emerson at his passing. Surviving relatives include two daughters Mrs Mary L Stainaker and Mrs O M Williams a sister Mrs H E Streetman a brother Homer Emerson five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Little Bethel church with Masonic Lodge members assisting Pallbearers E L Davis Vernon Allgood T E Tante Tom Harmon E L Holloway and E D McCorvey honorary pallbearers Rev W J Childree Rev Knighton Rev J R Hunt and Rev B T Gill. J W Edwards II led funeral arrangements.

Mrs Dozier Former Butler Pastor Dies in Albany
Funeral services were held at Morgan Baptist Church for Mrs Paul Dozier who died August 11 in Albany after suffering a heart attack. She was interred in Morgan Cemetery after passing away in an ambulance on the way to Albany hospital.

Fire Rips Butler Plant Aided By Neighboring Crews
A blaze at J. R. Wilson’s rear variety works in Butler caused heavy losses estimated over 25000 dollars. Fire departments from Reynolds, Fort Valley, and Thomaston joined Butler crews to save adjacent homes and the Methodist church, with only portable machinery salvaged. Wilson thanks the communities for heroic firefighting and rapid response.

Body of Pfc Benford Rogers Returned Home For Burial
The body of Pfc Benford Rogers was laid to rest at Turners Chapel cemetery four miles north of Butler on August 13 in a large gathering of World War II veterans relatives and friends. Rev J W M Stipe pastor of Butler Methodist church and Scout Master led the rites. Rogers enlisted January 1943 and was killed January 13 1945 in Belgium with Battery C 216th Field Artillery. He was the son of Mr Ira and Mrs Lula Moore Rogers and husband to Beatrice Brooks with a daughter Carolyn whom he never met.
