Missionary Society Groups Report Busy Monday Work
The Woman's Missionary Society of the Methodist church held five groups meetings on Monday. Group 1 reported nine members, 76 Bible chapters read, and 17 visits to the sick while Mrs. H N Cochran attended. Groups 2 and 3 shared a joint session with Mrs. M Goodwin leading, followed by refreshments. Group 4 met at Mrs. Hugo Lenz home with a Japan sky piloting lesson and social hour. Group 5, led by Miss Nelle Cole, studied The Upward Trail to Japan, with 83 chapters read and five visits to strangers or the sick.

Fire alarms and small blazes reported Sunday and Friday
The fire alarm rang before 3 pm Sunday for a fire at Sam Cavitt’s residence where an out building burned from an unknown cause. Firemen with a garden hose stopped the blaze after only the door was damaged. A Saturday alarm at Howell Grocery Company was a false alarm per the Fire Station. Friday’s alarm at Mrs. B. F. Clark’s home due to a coal oil stove fire caused no damage.

Vernon Texas oil well explodes after discovery
Miss Margaret Stephens, owner in South Vernon Oil Co No 1 Stephens, reports a new Vernon oil field gusher. Drilled to Bridwell sand at 2038 feet last Tuesday the well flows heavily, with 8500 barrels per day estimated as storage limits allow. Oil spills into hastily built tanks, and no further drilling has occurred.

Special Casket Case Endures Harris Burial
Sam Harris aged 45 weighing 720 pounds died of pneumonia at Farmersville near Greenville. Undertakers prepared a special casket and will transport the body by motor truck rather than a hearse. The door to Harris home reportedly must be removed to remove the body.

Death of Peter Martine in Elliott
Peter Martine died Thursday evening after a short illness. He was 63 and had lived near Elliott for twenty years. Rev. J. B. Gleissner conducted the funeral Friday morning with many friends assisting at the burial.
