Chairman J Webb Howell urges immediate Red Cross memberships as Thanksgiving Day marks the last date for the annual roll call. He asks all chairmen to report by Wednesday night and volunteers to join or contribute via the Red Cross office 491 to meet rising needs this winter.
Monday's circle chaired by Mrs. Ole Martinsen completed 82 garments for the poor, including two white families and one sick mother. Garments were placed at City Hall Red Cross rooms for future needs as Tuesday's Presbyterian group continues similar work to aid residents at winter’s start.
Lamar Williams returned from Mason county Friday night with his limit in deer, having killed two bucks. One has seven points and the other four. He left Monday for Mason county with 12 companions. Three others also had their limit: L. G. Wood Jr. and Sam Wood of Navasota and H. L. Sandel of Madisonville returned with him. The remaining eight hunters continue the hunt as the party had bagged 15 by that time.
Amarillo November report shows Panhandle wheat acreage 25 percent below last year at the same time. Crop condition not more than 60 percent of normal. Upper 26 Panhandle counties may total no more than 1,200,000 acres versus 2,650,000 planted in 1950 and a 1924-avg of 1,600,000.
Speaker John N. Garner told reporters the house may pass a beer bill at the upcoming short session but avoided a timing forecast. He estimated legalized beer for revenue could bring 250 to 300 million dollars and suggested combined with spending cuts a balanced budget might be possible without new taxes.
The San Angelo Wool Company reports the peak price for short wool in Texas at 12.58 cents per pound from a fall clip sale of 40 000 pounds. The prior high was 12 cents cited by N. P. Peterson of Brackettville who sold 300 000 pounds to a Boston firm that has bought about 2 500 000 pounds this season.
Mrs Ellen Barton aged 83 died at her son T D Barton’s Austin home after a fall left a fractured hip and leg. Survived by her son and daughter in law Mrs T Barton formerly Miss Lillie Lemon Bryan and a sister in law and niece in Fort Worth. Funeral Saturday at St Joe with Barton family burials.
The William Scott chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution holds its regular meeting Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of Mrs. D. H. Reid in College Station. All members are urged to attend.
Hiram Downard spent the last week in Hayes county with deer hunters and returned to Bryan with venison. His party did not win the top prize but killed two bucks.
Managing editors from Texas newspapers gathered in the Brazos valley to chart plans for the coming year. They reported a broad rise in optimism, noting fear and hysteria receding from the public psyche and economy. The group spans Amarillo to Galveston and Orange to Del Rio. A visit to the George Chance plantation near Bryan is mentioned.
W H Ryan of Steep Hollow rode a wheelbarrow north on Main Street toward Austin as part of an election wager with Tom Goodman of Harvey. Onlookers cheered as the pair left Wilson Motor Company, with bets tied to Mrs Miriam Ferguson's defeat of Gov Ross Sterling. Distance and final progress not disclosed.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce directors urge extending the current Highway 6 contract one more mile east of College to benefit campus residents. Jno M Lawrence and Mrs Lee J Rountree named to press the extension. A report on the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors convention was delivered by Rountree and J F Casey, noting a successful gathering and warm hospitality.
Kurten resident E P Wise aged 52 years 10 months and 10 days died at home after a ten day illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from the home and at Zion Evangelical Church of Kurten conducted in German. Interment followed in Kurten cemetery. Wise born in Posen Germany came to America in 1886 and lived in Kurten since. he served 22 years as elder treasurer and president of Zion Evangelical Lutheran church. Surviving are his widow Lena six sons Theodore Henry George Willie Otto and Hugo three daughters Lena Freda and Erna and a brother Ernest.
Red Cross distributes cotton cloth from headquarters at City Hall. Mrs. J B Priddy and Mrs. M M Erskine begin registering families for material and garments. Singer Machine Co provides twelve electric machines and cutting tables for volunteer sewing rooms.
Neal Campbell a black resident near Millican was shot in the back by Constable Will McFerrin during an arrest attempt on Saturday night after Campbell opened fire earlier in the day. Campbell died soon after at a local hospital. McFerrin was held on $500 bond for an examining trial set for Monday, Nov. 25.
Deputy Sheriff Tom Jones of Odessa brought back the hide of a large mountain lion from near Springerville in eastern Arizona. The animal measured 7 feet 4 inches from nose to tail and weighed 230 pounds after being cornered by dogs. Jones shot the beast at close range to protect the pursuing hounds.
Bryan fire department and local citizens coordinate to repaint repair and distribute discarded toys as Christmas gifts. Toys are to be brought to the City Hall fire station or picked up by firefighters if needed for delivery on Christmas Eve or morning.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4 from the family home on East 25th street for Julia B. Jenkins wife of C E Jenkins after a months long illness. Dr L B Elrod pastor of the First Methodist church led the service with a choir from the church singing hymns. Burial was at the city cemetery with Dr Elrod presiding at the grave. McCulloch Dansby Company arranged the funeral. Jenkins leaves a husband seven children two daughters and two sons remain in Bryan and several relatives from Belton San Marcos Waco Austin and Norman recounted attendance.
J. B. Stanford, president of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce and editor of the Southern Agriculturist, spoke to the Harris County agricultural workers meeting in Houston on Monday night.
The First Methodist church of Bryan elected Oak McKenzie as chair man and R C Franks as vice chair man with C E Jenkins secretary and Will K Gibbs treasurer for the coming year. Committees were named with A M Waldrop G C White and E R Bryant on finance and J W James C M Bethany and Jnc W Black on the worship committee. Publicity will be handled by W S Smith Mrs Lee J Rountree and Sam Crenshaw. T A Adams chairs buildings and grounds with E W Crenshaw Sr and R M Dansby aiding. The first quarterly conference is set for December 4.
Mrs. Margaret Ward aged 52 died after six weeks of illness. Services held at McCulloch Dansby chapel with Rev. Gleissner and Rev. Wilson. Body to be taken to Houston for service at the Church of Annunciation and burial at Forrest Hill with Magnolia Grove Woodman Circle in charge. Pallbearers named.
Sixth grade pupils in Rye school ask Justice J. T. McGee, Brazos county poet laureate, for a sketch of his life and Bryan’s early history. McGee, pleased, declines due to ill health and time constraints.
Construction of a derrick on the Krox Williams farm two miles northeast of Millican signals a Shell Petroleum Company lease deep test. C W Atkins of San Antonio will drill, with Barnett Bedias Grimes county reports noting rapid progress on nearby wells and plans for a 5000 foot test. J L Edge of Bryan and others back the Madison county project near North Zulch.
County Agent Co L Benson and Home Demonstration Agent Blanche Brown hosted a meat cutting canning and curing exhibition in the old Duke and Ayres building. The report shows half a beef valued at 9 dollars on foot with cans and seasoning totaling 5.06 dollars, yielding an increased value of 5.12 dollars for half and 10.24 dollars for the whole animal. Thirty men and 20 women attended, and plans were made to stage similar demonstrations after Thanksgiving with pork as the next focus.
Norman A. Stewart Day was observed by the Business Men's Bible Class of the First Baptist Sunday School to honor his attendance record. On Sunday morning, Nov. 20, he completed five years or 260 Sundays without a break while serving as vice president and president of the class.
The Texas Associated Press Managing Editors held their final session in Bryan naming Dean Chenoweth president and Allen Merriman secretary. Temple was chosen as the site for the 1983 meeting. Nearly all members left Bryan this afternoon praising the event as the best in organization history and enjoying hospitality at the Chance plantation.
A ton of Christmas seals to fight tuberculosis has been deposited in the Austin post office for mailing on Thanksgiving Day. Miss Pansy Nichols, executive secretary of the Texas Tuberculosis Association, said the seals are enclosed in 32 000 letters, each containing 200, with a total value of 64 000 dollars. They will go to 173 Texas counties served directly by the state association.
