Livingston student wins Allen Academy oratorical contest

Ernest E Cochran of Livingston won the Allen Academy oratorical contest held May 22 in the Allen Academy auditorium, earning the orator’s medal from Judge W C Davis. Several entrants delivered modern masterpieces, Cochran spoke Webster's Daniel Adams version of the Declaration of Independence, and P Alexander placed second with Neff’s Armistice Day speech.

District Court Sentences Man for Statutory Charge

Charley Murphy, about 45, a negro, was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary by a jury in district court this morning after being found guilty of a statutory charge brought by his daughter. He waived further trial and begins serving today. The State vs. Will Luther liquor case was reset to June 1 due to two absent key witnesses. Lonnie Mosely also has a case reset for the same date.

Representative H A Turner of Madisonville joined by County Engineer Granbury and W A Boyett met A McCormick district 17 highway official in Bryan on Monday to discuss Madison county roads and the fate of Highway 21. Turner supports a state highway supervision shift and gasoline tax to fund roads. He was elected to fill an unexpired term and is unopposed.
