Barbecue Staged For Convention Visitors Friday

The East Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association held its final session Friday at the Fin Feather club with a large barbecue hosted by the Bryan and Brazos county Chamber of Commerce. Vistors were initiated into the Order of Fleas, praised hospitality in Bryan and College Station, and many attendees said it was the best meeting yet.

Class of Eight To Be Confirmed At Zion Church

Eight young people will be confirmed Sunday at 10 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Kurten by Rev. Herman E. Spitzenpfeil. Services will be in English after nine months of daily instruction and a congregation witness. Demonstrations at Prospect Garden Meeting

Jack Johnson and Miss Blanche Brown led garden demonstrations for the Prospect home demonstration club at Mrs. Steele McDonald’s home. Guests included Mrs. W.S. Beason Hosts Radio Party for Brazos 4-H Leaders

County Agent C. L. Beason invites 4-H club presidents and secretaries to a Saturday radio party at his College avenue home from 11 30 a m to 12 30 p m during the Farm and Home Hour. Members from four states will appear alongside speakers from the U S Department of Agriculture. The United States Marine Band led by Captain Taylor Branson will provide music.

Bryan C C to Lead County Chamber Membership Drive

The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce will plan an intensive membership drive for Bryan College Station and rural areas with Travis B. Bryan as committee chair. Directors also approved sending the Allen Academy band to the district Rotary convention in Galveston and noted strong publicity from the East Texas Chamber of Commerce convention. The first Bryan Community Band concert is set for Friday at Stephen F. Austin High School with a $200 appropriation and a cup for the College horse show winner.

Funeral Service For Aged Brazos Co Man Sunday

Funeral services for Frank Prozak were held Sunday at St. Joseph's Catholic church in Rosprim community. Prozak born in Czecho Slovakia on June 14 1849 died at the family farm after a long illness. He lived in Brazos county 51 years and is survived by his widow and sister Mrs Frances Fridel of Bryan.

Much Work Done On City Well At 700 Ft

The Lane Texas Company reached 700 foot in the city well on Friday using a six inch drill. Reaming to 20 inches will follow. Two shifts and two drillers work rapidly on a 200 gallons per minute guarantee. After reaming, screens go in at 300 and 700 feet and the wall will be graveled.

Black man Makes a Leap From Moving Car in City

Around 10 am Monday a Black man jumped from a moving car in front of Cloud and Tucker's cleaning establishment. He hit his head, ran toward the telephone office, then returned for his hat. He vanished near the Greenwood tourist park still shouting, with bystanders unsure of the driver or himself. Authorities note threats of taking him to the country and harming him.

Bond Issue Vote Needed for Relief Fund to Proceed

City Manager R G Williams reported to Brazos county that no Relief Fund real property funds will be available for May and June unless the Texas legislature votes to amend the state constitution to authorize a 20 million dollar bond issue for relief work. One more 1000 dollar allotment remains for the last week of April.

Men Begin Clearing City Land for New Sewer Plant

Workers started Tuesday morning clearing the right of way for the proper disposal plant on South College avenue. Timber cut will be piled to season and offered to the Good Cheer Association next fall for use.

Woman of Kurten Dies and Is Buried in Kurten

Mrs. Johanna Paulin aged 76 and 5 months died Tuesday at 8 30 p m at the family farm home in Kurten after five weeks illness. Born in Germany she came to America at 54 with her husband and son Richard Paulin now in the U S Army at Fort Sill Okla. Funeral at Evangelical Lutheran Church Kurten today at 3 with Rev Anderson and burial in Kurten Cemetery. First Methodist dean named for Texas Assembly dormitory

Mrs. E. R. Bryant of the First Methodist church in Bryan has accepted an invitation to serve as dean of one of the girls dormitories at the Young People's Assembly of the Texas Conference Methodist church to be held in Jacksonville late in May.

East Texas judges elect McSwain secretary treasurer at meet

In closing sessions the East Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association adopted a resolution urging quarterly delinquent tax payments and elected Judge A S McSwain of Bryan as secretary treasurer. Judge R E Biggs of Liberty was named president and Commissioner H O Mills of Port Arthur vice president. Paris chosen for fall convention city. W H Ward urged home rule for county government and four addresses discussed tax reform, forestry, and Roosevelt era programs.

Land Foreclosure Halted by Brazos Judge Davis

Old Wedding Ring Found in Garden After Thirty Years

A mother's wedding ring lost over 30 years ago was found by C. E. Jenkins while digging at the old Jenkins homestead near the Travis school. After a fruitless search, a shovel full of dirt exposed the ring in the garden.

Paving on No 2 Underpass Could Shift to No 6 Work

The No 2 underpass on Highway 21 west of Bryan reached with new concrete for about three miles. Delays stem from sand and gravel shortages. contractors may move equipment to Highway 6 from Bry up to College to accelerate paving and stockpile materials for No 21.

Oratory Contest For Downs Medal Thursday Night

The ninth annual P. L. Downs Oratorical Contest at Texas A and M College will be held Thursday night May 4 at 8 o clock in the assembly hall. Five speakers and an alternate were chosen after Monday's preliminaries. Auto Runs Wild After Break in Steering Gear

Hugh Looney Jr and Mrt Looney, sons of Mr and Mrs Hugh Looney, faced a scare Monday at noon when steering gear failed on their car. The vehicle veered across College Avenue after Baker Street, crossed a lawn at G Sam Parker’s home, and stopped in Elon Stuart’s yard causing flower and shrub damage but no injuries.

New Loan Firm Chartered for Local Operations

The Bryan Investment Company with capital of 25000 fully paid up has been chartered. Officers include Travis B. Bryan president R W Howel vice president F L Henderson secretary treasurer and J Webb Howell director. It will purchase sell and deal in notes bonds and securities and may act as trustee and agent under lawful contracts. No headquarters arranged yet beyond Mr Bryan's office at the First National Bank.

Fire at Raymond Ball Home Causes Garage Damage

Fire in the garage at the Raymond Ball home in the Travis addition drew the fire department Friday night. Cause undetermined as doors were open and the car was outside. Damage estimated at $100.

Texas Education Rally Dates Set in Mineral Wells

May 4 5 and 6 have been set for the annual Texas Educational Rally to be held in Mineral Wells announced by Miss Lillian Peek supervisor of Home Economics Education at the State Department of Education in Austin. The rally was held here last year with an attendance of more than 500.

Senate Kills Plan to Submit Bond Issue

The senate refused to vote to submit the proposed constitutional amendment to authorize a 20 million dollar state bond issue for unemployment relief. The vote was 18 to 12, three short of the required majority. Reports suggest no RFC funds for relief in Texas in May and June unless the legislature votes to submit the bond issue to the people.

No Sales Tax Enacted This Session

Austin May 2 There will be no sales tax enacted at this session of the Legislature. The House voted 73 to 51 not to take up the Kay ton measure to levy a 2 percent tax on all retail sales except food. The Senate panel will hear Hughes income tax bill later this week as leaders anticipate debate. The sulphur tax measure failed again on a 53 to 53 vote, needing two thirds.

Woman of Bryan to Receive Sacred Music Degree

Evelyn Senden of Bryan will earn a Bachelor of Sacred Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary during Fort Worth commencement May 8 to 12. She was featured in a senior recital at Cowden Hall with Katherine Sullivan as accompanist, presenting songs including The Voice of the Father and Deep River among others.

Newton Resigns From Fidelity. Todd Named Successor

The Fidelity Finance Company announced that H. Newton, secretary and treasurer for over three years, resigned. J. H. Todd, previously with the company, was secured to fill the position after leaving Fidelity to move to Tyler for an insurance job. Todd later returned to Bryan a few miles away.
