Legion of Bryan Plans Fourth of July Celebration

The Karl Graham Post 159 American Legion will stage the annual Fourth of July celebration this year. Commander Albert Goodman will name a committee to oversee arrangements, with Ed S. Martin and Harry Estill leading two membership drives. The post also arranged a membership drive closing April 3 and a Legion Fair Association event, with a list of members present at the Friday night meeting.

Stabler School Records 100 Percent Immunized

Mrs Edna Abbott Shelton county health nurse and Dr R M Searcy immunized 12 children for diphtheria and gave one the Schick test at Stabler school near Rye community. The Friday effort puts the school at 100 percent in immunization according to Mrs Shelton.

Not Licensed Pilot Dies In College Park Plane Crash

William Freeman Lawrence, 15, of St. Louis and a Texas A&M mechanical engineering sophomore and college band member, died from injuries after a plane he piloted crashed near the golf course in College Park. Witnesses estimated the fall from 150 to 250 feet. the wreckage trapped him, and he died at 9 45 p.m. His father arrived from Dallas and took the body to St. Louis for interment. the plane reportedly belonged to Sergeant J W King. Lawrence had no pilot license but had been flying for about three and a half years.

East Texas Chamber of Commerce Anniversary Event Attended

Five Bryan residents including Mrs. Lee J. Rountree editor of The Eagle, County Agent C. L. Benson, City Manager R. G. Williams, and Judge A. S. McSwain left Thursday for Huntsville to attend the East Texas Chamber of Commerce Seventh Anniversary Celebration. Local Red Cross Sends Fourth Flour Order for Brazos County

Brazos County Red Cross Chapter under C M Bethany announces a fourth 90 day flour order from government wheat. Since March 1932 the chapter has distributed 320 barrels or 2560 sacks to needy families, with the latest delivery totaling 260 barrels or 2040 sacks. As of today, about 200 sacks remain in store, sufficient until the new supply arrives.

Men of Rockdale Seek Data About Public Utilities

A Rockdale delegation of city officials and local businessmen visited Bryan on Friday to inspect the city power plant and gather data on its operation. The group, led by City Manager R. G. Plan to Survey Brazos Negro Rural Schools

Brazos is one of four Texas counties to have a survey of rural negro schools. Mrs. W E Neeley, county superintendent, relayed word from D B Taylor, state supervisor, that a questionnaire will be sent to rural negro school teachers by Dr. Ambrose Caliver, senior education specialist for the Negro, with instructions to complete and return promptly.

Hard Wind Storm Sweeps Multiple Texas Communities

Reports from Mumford Iola Cross Hearne and Bryan describe a Sunday wind storm causing property loss. Two buildings toppled at the old White plantation in Mumford, many trees uprooted, Magnolia station damaged in Iola, and several homes damaged in Cross. No losses reported in Bryan.

The A and M Methodist church official board outlined two drives at a Monday meeting. One aims to enlist all local Methodists through social activities to support church work, and the other targets completing finances with teams to visit members in arrears. Alleged hijackers in speedy car get away

Constable Horace Reed and Sheriff J H Reed chased four suspects described by Navasota authorities as hijackers. A high powered car drove north on Highway 6, outrunning the speedster as Reed reached about 75 miles per hour. A negro stepped onto the highway at the city’s north end, causing Reed to halt and allowing the car to escape.

Old Carson Home Razed by Flames Saturday Night

Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the old C. A. Carson home on Union Hill Saturday night shortly after midnight. Mrs. G. L. Allen and three young children were inside. she escaped with almost all possessions lost, with no loss estimate or insurance details released.

Club Boys and Girls Visit Stock Show in Houston

Bra zos county club youths joined by County Agent C. L. Beason attended the South Texas Expository and Fat Stock Show in Houston. Accompanying Beason were Inez Higgs, Lottie Mac Cahill of Smetana, F. J. Komer, Joe Martin Henderson of Kurten, and Morris Williamson Route 4. Each has strong club records. Williamson earned a 1930 gold medal and Henderson a 1931 gold medal for outstanding club work, and Higgs, Williamson, and Henderson have profited over $1,000 in club efforts since starting.

Girl from Bryan Among Candidates For TCU Diploma

Miss Evelyn Cahill of Bryan appears on the tentative list for the June graduating class at Texas Christian University. She majors in commerce with a minor in economics. The unofficial list includes 135 students. The baccalaureate sermon is set for Sunday morning June 4 with commencement on Monday evening June 5 on campus.

Tabor Children Receive Anti-Diphtheria Toxoid Immunization

Doctor R M Searcy county physician led immunizations for 88 children in the Tabor community on Wednesday. Seven previously vaccinated children were given the Shick test to assess response. County health nurse Edna Abbott Shelton assisted amid local diphtheria cases reported in the area.

Bryan High Team Captures District Cattle Judging Title

Bryan High Vocational Agricultural team of Melvin Dansby Jack Gregg and Harvey D Watson, all first year students, won first in beef cattle at the district judging contest in Houston. They also tied for second in sheep judging and earned $3. Beef classes included beef cattle sheep dairy cattle and hogs with 28 teams participating.

Eighty Farmers Apply Here for Crop Loans

Reports today show that 80 applications already have been made for crop loans at the chamber of commerce offices, though only one week has elapsed since these were started this year. Anyone wishing to apply or receive information may do so at the chamber of commerce during the week. no charge is made for the application.

Two Negroes Face Assault Trial in Sheriff’s Son Case

Jesse and Sylvester Steen, two Black men, were tried in district court on assault with intent to murder charges linked to an attack on L. S. Reed, son of Sheriff J. W. Reed of Van Buren Ark. Reed was struck with a Winchester rifle during a disturbance at a Negro woman’s home, later healing at his parents’. Jury seated and testimony began with defense by Lamar Bethea and state representation by Oak McKenzie and aides.

Annie Parish Found Guilty of Murder in District Court

Annie Parish, described as a negress, was convicted of murdering James Monroe, a negro. The district court sentenced her to five years in state prison, suspended.

Relief efforts here unify on banking stability and relief talks

Bryan and Merce directors voiced faith in local state and national finances and the Roosevelt administration. They discussed relief agency work, farm placements, and a chamber sponsored meeting for relief and loan groups. About 100 applications for crop loans were cited and local civic events and scholarships noted.

Cheese Making Studied by Brazos Women

An American cheese demonstration was given to Brazos County women by Mrs. C. L. Novesad at Mrs. Frank Wentreck’s home on Monday afternoon. Mrs. Novesad noted that slight variation in cheese making does not affect taste. The secretary urged members to bring full reports to the March meeting. Attendees included Mesdames Chas, Novostad, Fritz Kindt, Adolph Novosad, Frank Wentreek, Ed Churik, G. A.
