Hiway Contracts May Be Let Ere Close of Month

Fort Worth engineer C E Swain visited Austin to discuss Texas highway projects funded by 24.5 million dollars in federal relief. The Texas highway commission may advertise bids for road work before month end and opens a July 25 bid for maintenance exceeding 300000 dollars, with no federal money involved. The commission plans final apportionment decisions next week and holds its next regular session August 14 with many bids to be opened.

Bryan Cemetery Association Holds Monthly Meeting at City Hall

The Bryan Cemetery Association directors met Thursday at ten with President Tyler Haswell presiding and secretary Dana Carnes present. They discussed beautification plans including extra land for graves, driveways, trees and shrubs, though no action was taken. improvements to continue next year. Treasurer N A Stewart reported funds with a total credit of 202.76 as of July 11, 1933.

Dr Richard Henry Harrison Dies A Bryan Leader And Doctor

Dr Richard Henry Harrison born October 16 1869 in Panky Grimes County earned medical degree from the Medical University Nashville 1896. He lived in Bryan since marriage in 1895 to Hattie Virginia Evetts Bethel, served Bryan as mayor twice and was active in local offices. Interment was in Bryan city cemetery.

Approximately 125 persons attended the Knights of Columbus Bryan Council No 1834 open meeting honoring Supreme Council representative Robert A MacKenzie of San Francisco. MacKenzie spoke on Catholic Action and Organization, urging mobilization of five million Catholic men to combat materialistic and Communist threats to Christian culture and civilization.

Florists Attend Texas State Association Meeting

Forrest Jones C. C. Wyatt Miss Lois Kraft and Mrs. Frank Boriskie returned from Temple where they attended the Texas State Florists association meeting held Tuesday and Wednesday. Jones Wyatt and Kraft represented Bryan Nursery and Floral company while Boriskie and J Coulter Smith represented J Coulter Smith Nursery. Smith returned from Temple late Thursday. The association chose Fort Worth for its 1934 meeting.

College Pool Becomes Faculty and Student Access Only

Beginning July 22 the new college pool will be open solely to faculty staff and students. Bryan residents may visit with sponsored guests for a fee, but tickets will no longer be sold to general public. The change aims to limit pool use as campus demand rises.

Nine Days to Plow Furrow Around Spade Ranch

Levelland July 17. J L Gover of Lubbock recalls 1888 fire guard work around the Spade ranch owned by Mr Pierce. A sulky turning plow pulled by horses plowed a nine day first furrow with a camping outfit and water wagons. Crews later expanded the effort to six to eight furrows and others organized, taking a month or more to complete.

Texas Extension Warns on Cotton Acreage Reduction Contracts

Texas Extension officials warn county and special agents that approved contracts for the nationwide cotton acreage reduction must be mailed to Washington by Wednesday night for final approval by Secretary Henry A. Wallace. Telegram notes slow mail delays and sets a deadline as field workers rush to approve and forward about 200,000 contracts already approved locally. The first Texas acceptances will go out July 19, with plow-up expected to begin around July 21.

Bryan Southpaw Returns Home to Rebuild Arm for Next Year

Bryan lefthander Bryan Griffin, who has pitched in the Western and Southern Leagues and in the International League with Albany, has come back to Bryan to rest his arm for a full year. After trials with Dallas and Tyler, doctors advised a year off. He trains in Reliance to stay in shape and hopes to play locally while preserving his arm for a professional return next season.

Pete Guerro, a Mexican man, is jailed on murder charges in connection with the death of Conrad Trezino, also Mexican, who was fatally injured Friday when he was allegedly pushed to the sidewalk by Guerreo, according to police reports.
