Crime Wave Shift After Prohibition Across Texas

The 18th Amendment reduced prison population in Texas counties from 1910 to 1933. Dallas and Harris counties saw declines in convicts per capita, while Galveston and Jefferson counties also benefited, with Harris, Galveston, and Jefferson showing notable drops in inmate density as of January 1, 1933.

Mayors in 49 cities wired by Wallace

Secretary Wallace telegraphed mayors of 49 cities including Houston in 25 states announcing the government will use its full powers to prevent unwarranted bread price increases. Frederick Clemson Howe heads the consumer interests section, saying efforts will check unjustified food price advances.

Revival at Kurten to Continue Through Sunday

The Free Will Baptist church of Kurten hosts revival services led by Rev. B. Thompson, with daily sessions at 11 am and 8 30 pm through Sunday. Thompson says the meetings have been very successful and the public is invited to attend.

Cotton Farmers Of Brazos Offer Big Acreage Cut

About 350 Brazos county cotton farmers had signed lease offers covering 7 265 acres by Saturday night. The average yield was 169 5 pounds lint per acre versus 169 9 in 1932. Total lease cash without options was 34 495 dollars and with options 50 875 dollars. Options were sought on 1 814 leases. Local leaders say roughly 300 000 dollars will be injected into the Bryan trade area via government leases in six to eight weeks.

Oklahoma voters head to a July 11 special election to decide on admitting 3.2 beer. An estimated 500000 to 600000 citizens are expected to participate, breaking turnout records despite extreme heat.

Revival Service At Cottonwood Gains Noted Attendance

The Cottonwood revival began Sunday and attracted large crowds at both morning and evening services. Rev. R. L. Brown preached with H. T. Holland as chorister and Miss Gwendolyn Youngblood on piano. Members from College Station Baptist church joined the Monday night meeting as the pastor reports encouraging results.

Hiway Boosters Seek Highway Endorsement in Austin

Jno M Lawrence county judge A S McSwain commissioner Guy F Boyett and George Chance of Bryan traveled to Austin to meet the state highway commission about proposed highways from Roans Prairie in Grimes county and Somerville in Burleson county to intersect with highway No 6 near College Station. The Brazos county group joined with Grimes Burleson and Washington county delegations led by Senator Albert Stone. They expect Brazos county commissioners to appear Tuesday to seek approval for all or part of the lateral road program under the Industry Recovery act.

Gaspergou Catch By Newcomb At Navosta River

A 25 pound gaspergou, three feet long, was caught by R. R. Newcomb and friends in the Navosta river near Steep Hollow. The fishing party included Mr. and Mrs. Wess Acord, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Hassel, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Riley, Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. Chick Williams, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Saxon and Eugene Carroll during a weekend outing.

Funeral Service Held Friday for Aged Resident

Miss Hattie C. Tucker, long time Bryan resident and relative of Dr. W. H. Oliver, died Thursday night after a long illness. Services were held at her Bryan home Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. L A Wilson. Interment followed in Franklin Louisiana, with Bishop James Craik Morris presiding at the Franklin Episcopal church. Pallbearers included E R Canady and others.

New High Prices Listed for Wheat and Rye

Chicago July 11 May wheat rose to 1.14 per bushel while December rye reached 1.03 and a half. The advance signals a new high level for grain prices in the market today.

Texas cotton acreage cutback show in state contracts

Texas Extension Service tabulations from College Station show the average farm in contracts has 47.2 acres of cotton with 17.9 acres retired. Analysts estimate 151,161 farmers, about 38.5 percent of listed 395,106, have signed contracts by Friday afternoon. Field workers report over 90 percent indicating a desire to sign. Just over half of contracts offered have county committee approval.

Brazos County Farmers Expand Acreage Reduction Contracts

By Monday night 586 Brazos county farmers signed contracts to lease at least 25 percent of their cotton acreage for the cotton acreage reduction program. The group covers 30 567 total acres with 10 392 involved in contracts and 47 468 75 dollars paid on non option contracts plus 68 761 dollars on option contracts, totaling 116 224 75 dollars. About 2608 bales of cotton are tied to option contracts and estimated lint yield this year is 173.8 pounds per acre versus 168 pounds last year.

Robertson county Grand Jury holds partial report indicting felonies

The Robertson county grand jury issued a partial report Friday afternoon under Judge W. C. Davis and recessed to next week. Seven indictments charging felonies were included. no report was made on the Hammond slaying which had been investigated.

Veteran Pastor R. C. Armstrong Dies at 90

Rev. R. C. Armstrong a Methodist minister for 70 years died in Dallas at age 90 and was buried in Corsicana. Licensed at 18 and ordained soon after he served in Weath erford Waco Mulkey Memorial Fort Worth and many Central and West Texas cities. He preached until last year and filled Central Methodist Fort Worth on his birth anniversary. Survived by his wife and three daughters including Mrs. Mittie McCammon and Mrs. O. K. Shannon.

Grimes County Women Hostess to Many From This Area

The Grimes County Federation of Women's Clubs met Tuesday at Plantersville with the Plantersville Stoneham club as hostess. Sessions began at 10 a.m. in the new Community Clubhouse built largely through local women’s efforts. Mrs. Lester Taylor Roan's Prairie served as president and Miss Evelyn Barry Navasota led community singing. Judge Sherwood Wise gave the invocation. Continued on page 3.

Bryan City Plans Delayed Decision on Public Improvements

City commissioners delayed action on Industry Recovery act projects including abattoir, swimming pool, water supply with College, incinerator, hospital and street work. They will reconsider at the July meeting. A summer water rate was approved for July through September, about 25 percent off. Continental Oil won the year’s lubricant contract.

Funeral Service Held Friday For Mrs Sheets

Funeral services for Mrs Josie Robinson Sheets were conducted Friday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr Thos Gordon Watts officiating. Hymns, prayers, and floral arrangements marked the ceremony followed by burial in Bryan City Cemetery. She was over 80, longtime Bryan resident, daughter of former mayor Judge J M Robinson. Her only daughter Alma Sheets Derden predeceased her, leaving one grandchild Edgar Der.

Work Progresses On Building for Church of Christ

The Church of Christ advances on its new building at the Washington avenue and Twenty-ninth street corner across from the First Presbyterian church. A temporary frame structure rises at the rear while the front is prepared for a permanent church. Bob Hopper of Wellborn is the contractor. All work has been donated so far with many volunteers aiding the project.

Home destroyed by fire at Cameron Ranch near Bryan

Fire of unknown origin leveled the residence of Lee Cash at Cameron Ranch five miles north of Bryan at about 3 am Monday. The home was only partially insured.

Cars in Collision on Kurten Road Injuries None

Constable Horace Reed and Sheriff J. H. Reed were passengers when their car collided with another driven by a man named Holick on Kurten road Sunday night. Both vehicles suffered heavy damage but no injuries were reported.

Sewage Plant Construction Advances at South College

Pouring of concrete on the Hoffman tank at the new South College avenue sewage disposal plant will begin today or tomorrow. The pit is nearly complete with forms made. The site has seen days of activity with many workers excavating building forms hauling dirt. All labor on the project is paid with R F C funds to provide employment and relief.

Mr and Mrs Frank Wisoski hosted a family reunion barbecue at the Agricultural Experiment Station farm near College. About 50 guests attended the dinner yesterday on the grounds.

Public Works Discussed For Bryan Aide Under Industry Recovery Act

Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce directors spent most of Tuesday morning on cotton acreage and proposed public works under the Industry Recovery act. Speakers favored launching approved projects plus street and highway improvements. George A. Adams called the projects of vast importance and urged serious consideration before disapproval. Johnson Caldwell and others voiced support for action in line with citizen wishes and commission authority. McQuillen favored a swimming pool park and playground.

Man from Marlin Hurt In Highway Crash Near Bryan

O. Hoffman of Martin was severely injured Monday afternoon when his car left the highway south of Bryan, overturned in a ditch, and suffered a skull fracture and a broken arm. His sister Mrs. P. Pinno of Mart endured cuts and bruises but returned home. The crash occurred about 10 miles south of Bryan as they headed to Brenham.

Hopkins Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel at A and M Campus

Major S. R. Hopkins of the U S Army has been promoted to lieutenant colonel effective July 1. Since joining the Texas A and M college staff in 1931 he has become a popular officer and today received many congratulations from friends at the campus headquarters.
