The Bryan Booster urges Brazos County readers to select capable and proven lawmakers for the 48th Texas Legislature. It argues reforms require cooperative governors and dependable representatives to address urgent economic and social issues facing Texas. The note signals continuation on page 6.
Absentee voters sent 51 ballots to County Clerk Jess B. McGee as the primary nears. Of these 51 ballots, 24 were mailed and 27 were filled out locally and filed for distribution to precincts.
A two day canning event for the Black community at Roan's Chapel produced 310 cans of chicken, peas, tomatoes and corn. The process used pressure canners supplied by the Bryan chamber of commerce. H. K. Hornsberry led the effort with aide Mrs Daisy Rich from Guadalupe College Seguin.
Brazos County 4-H members Louis Corgy Edge Carl Wilson Prospect Albina Severa Rye Tony Noto Steele’s Store John Rubin Smetana Nick Fazzino Steele’s Store were named scholarship winners at the Texas A and M College 1932 short course according to County Agent C L Benson.
The Texas A&M area saw a rise in temperatures from 97 to 106 degrees from Wednesday to Sunday. Rain was scarce with 0.90 inches on Monday. The 106 degree mark last occurred August 20, 1930, and last year’s peak reached 100 degrees on July 7.
Bryan public utilities posted net earnings of 71 190.24 for the year ended June 30 at a city commission meeting. Half ($35 595.12) goes to the public utility sinking fund, the other half divided among Streets Fire Schools Parks and Cemetery with funds used to pay notes and warrants. Pit toilets were discussed but no action taken.
Funeral services were conducted at First Methodist Church in Bryan for Mrs Martha Brown who died at the family home near College Station July 19 after a several weeks illness. Rev Ed J Harris and Rev Jesse Thomson presided with interment in Bryan City Cemetery. The 86 year old Georgia born widow of T H Brown left four daughters Mrs G C Calhoun Mrs E L Bradley Mrs D P Herrin and Mrs Charles Gorzycki. Pallbearers were E W Crenshaw Sr T A Adams W F Gibbs J D Martin Pat Newton Oak McKenzie.
City water department workers replace a 2 inch water main on North Bryan avenue with planned repairs to other old and worn mains under consideration.
The Houston tax assessor lists the city's rendered property valuation at 249,541,650 dollars, 121,170 dollars less than last year. Tax assessor T. W. Browne cites more property being assessed as why a larger reduction was not shown. The current city tax levy on the rendered roll totals 4,924,318 dollars.
The First Christian church of Bryan will hold its annual church school picnic at Sue Haswell Memorial Park at 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Rev. Arthur A. Hyde leads as general manager with W. A. Orth chairing games J. D. Benson transportation and W. S. Collard meals. Conveyances await at the church corner College Avenue and East 27th Street at 4 30.
Twenty six carloads of watermelons have been shipped from Iola this season generating 75 to 100 dollars per carload. Farmers also sent shipments to Bryan Navasota Madisonville Hearne and nearby towns beyond Texas.
Miss Gracie Huckaby of Prospect suffered facial and neck burns when she toppled a pot of hot coffee. Mrs D J McDonald treated her at home and said she rested easier later Friday.
The Millican Methodist ladies organize a barbecue supper at the church at 8 p m on July 21 with King Fuqua barbecuing the meat. Committee chairs include Mrs C B McGregor cake, Mrs Robi Fuqua pies, and Mrs Paul McSwain salads and pickles. The public and candidates are invited.
Farm women and girls in Brazos County exhibit canned and preserved fruits and vegetables at the Sue aswell Memorial Park encampment. They promote home storage, budgeting, and menu planning to ensure cheaper, better living through the summer to stock winter supplies, following Texas Extension Service guidance.
Encampment at Sue Haswell Memorial Park named winners in 4‑H and club divisions. Trips to A & M were awarded for better yard herbarium garden and canning work with multiple winners and disqualifications noted for prior awards. Organizations including the Brazos County Chamber of Commerce and local clubs funded the trips.
The Agricultural committee of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce offers 25 dollars for the first bale of this season's cotton sold in Bryan. Bale must be grown in Bryan trade territory, weigh at least 500 pounds, and be entirely this season's crop. W R McCullough, chamber secretary, announced this morning.
Albany July 20 farmers in Shackelford county are expanding hog slaughter for local sale after months of marketing country cured meat. Hams and bacon are pecan timber smoked giving an unusually fine flavor, and farmers cannot meet the demand for these pecan smoked products.
Brazos County election officials urge voters to cast ballots before noon next Saturday to shorten the tally. Bry an and College precincts emphasize early turnout to achieve quicker election night results.
Isaac J. Holligan 82 8 died after a lingering illness at his son J L Holligan's Steep Hollow home. Funeral at Steep Hollow church conducted by Rev Char ley E Bullock, with burial in Holligan family lot. Survived by widow, three daughters and two sons. Arrangements by McCulloch-Dansby Co of Bryan.
A full oil crew and their families are on the C. A. Harris farm ten miles west of Bryan Brazos county. Active drilling is expected to start in a few days with full details to follow from officials.
Brazos County farm women were judged on pantries as part of the Live at Home project sponsored by A and M College. Agents J L Brock Kay Hassell and W R McCullough led the tour to select short course scholarship winners to be announced at the 4 H encampment.
Between 400 and 500 people attended the Smetana school barbecue with barbecued meat, pickles, salad, and cake. Afternoon speeches by county and district candidates and state candidates urged unity for the Democratic ticket as $20 was raised from two cake sales.
Timothy Hennessy, 84, father of Mrs. W. B. Cline of Bryan, died Friday afternoon at 2 10 after living with his daughter during the winter. Funeral was held Saturday at 3 p.m. in Woodville. He is survived by three daughters and three sons, including Mesdames Cline Hughes and Minter, and sons J P Hennessy and Tim Hennessy Jr.
Bennie Griffin and Henry God led revival services at Prospect school Sunday afternoon after conducting meetings in rural county schoolhouses. A large crowd attended the event, continuing a series of revival efforts in the area.
Brazos County residents eligible for the first primary next Saturday fall into two groups. Men and women who turned 60 before January 1, 1931 may vote without poll tax receipts this Saturday and in other elections this year. Those who turned 21 since January 1, 1931 may vote next Saturday and in the second primary and general election without poll tax receipts.
In June Brazos county dipped 134 407 head of cattle and work stock under Dr W C Brown campaign records show 2 881 owners and a county total of 42 592 cattle and work stock. Brazos ranks high among counties under federal supervision with only four counties having more livestock.
Mrs Mary Sanders aged 83 died after a lingering illness at her daughter Mrs Will Mims home near Navasota. Funeral services were held at the Mims residence and interment followed in the family burying ground nine miles from Navasota. Daughter Mrs Minnie McAlpine of Bryan and several Bryan residents attended.
George Shaw brought in the first open cotton bolls of the season to the Eagle office in Bryan on Saturday. The report notes no statement on whether the crop was intensely cultivated to force early blooming.
The fire department was called at 3 30 p m Friday afternoon to extinguish a grass fire on East 26th street.
UWALDE July 19 Speaker John N Garner began his vacation with a dawn saddle ride before breakfast and read the papers in bed as a vacation concession. He plans a fishing trip with crony Ross Brumfield and will keep their campsite secret.
Fire at Dellewood Tourist Camp on College road destroyed cottages 1 2 and 3 while occupants in 2 were uninsured. Loss estimated 600 to 800 dollars with extinguishing by chemical truck and pumper. Firefighters kept flames from spreading to the remaining three cottages despite distant city water.
City commission adopts resolution to raise about 9000 dollars from public utility net earnings for the coming year to meet sinking fund requirements. They will also lay 375 feet of sidewalk at Bowie school using remaining school construction funds. Pit toilet installation discussed but postponed.
Two Brazog county couples Matt Haines with May Crawford and Hilary Hanna with Helen Coulter filed notices of intention to marry with County Clerk Jessey McGee.
Voters will confront the longest ballot in county history on August 23 for the first primary. The slate lists 126 candidates for state district county and precinct offices with several seats still without filings. The count includes nine for governor 38 for congress 70 for state and oil offices and numerous county races.
