A folk style confrontation between landlord and tenant unfolds in verse. The landlord declares a move off the land while offering to lease forty five percent of the area and recounts hiring labor to cover the rest. The tenant pleads for another year but faces possible eviction as cuts in profits affect the agreement. The verse references “The Big Boy in the office” cutting lint and promises of fifty percent remain on the remainder.
Mrs. Frank Zubik Sr. underwent a major operation Monday at St. Josephs hospital. Visitors from Steep Hollow included W. S. Burt C. Y. Cobb and F. P. Matus. Joe Court visited Bryan from Steele’s Store. The P. S. Mangum family moved into the house at 3716 East 28th Street, previously occupied by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Gordon Watts during the Presbyterian manse construction.

After reviewing monthly expense reports and fee earnings, Brazos County Commissioners set salaries for all county officers on the new salary and expense system effective January 1. Key salaries include Sheriff 3000, County Judge 2400, Tax Collector 3000, Clerk 3000, Treasurer 2000, and County Attorney 2800, with deputies and allowances detailed. precinct officers remain on the fee system.
Chicago January 14 The Drake estate mail fraud trial ended for 21 defendants with acquittals for four Texans Judge Philip Sullivan ordered verdicts of acquittal Harlingen residents Dr L M Davis J D Cough Pharr resident J Lucas Fox and La Feria resident Guy O Walk were among those acquitted The case involved promoters seeking a mythical Drake estate valued at 150 million dollars and reduced defendants from 41 to 20 by the judge's order
Fort Worth real estate man Joseph H. Price announced Monday his bid for the United States Senate in the Democratic primary against Senator Morris Sheppard. Price pledges a retirement annuity for young workers and federal controls on individual wealth ownership with greater profit shares to labor. He has thirty five years in Texas as a former farmer, lecturer and writer, born in Louisiana.
Dr and Mrs W A Guynes and two children of Mathis are in Bryan with Dr Guynes brother Jim Guynes of Calvert who is critically ill with pneumonia at St Josephs hospital Marvin T Robertson of Hearne is also here for the day The case began with flu confinement then relapse Thursday He was brought to Bryan hospital Friday and has been seriously ill since then
Caesar Bradley is charged with carrying a concealed weapon in the form of brass knuckles. He was arrested Friday night by Policeman Horace Reed. Bradley claims Calvert as his home.
Odea DeHart, alleged auto thief who escaped Brazos county jail Sept 28, 1935, is held at Fort Brown Brownsville for Brazos officers. Deputy Williams and Wade Cox drove to Brownsville to return him for trial. DeHart, a machine gun troop member of the 12th Cavalry, was arrested at Waco on stealing a car from Frank Ritchie. He and a companion, later acquitted, were trying to sell the car when arrested. He escaped by sawing bars in the jail window and was located through a letter to Bryan. He planned to return to Bryan to see two men, but did not want them to see him. Sheriff Nunn hailed the capture as a rare achievement in his term.
The Speedway Dental Methodist Episcopal church South in Austin has been renamed Shettles Memorial Methodist Episcopal church South in honor of Rev. E. L. Shettles, former pastor of Bryan’s First Methodist Church about 25 years ago. A series of his articles detailing his work here were carried by The Eagle recently.
Auto license tags for 1936 were received from the Texas state prison by Guy Harris, with Bud Russell and convicts unloading 4700 tags numbered 112951 to 117651. Harris said under the new system no special numbers could be reserved. buyers must be on hand when their number comes up. Sales are recorded in a weekly, serial order book to maintain the accounting system.
Jeff M. Dillard died Sunday night at 8 20 following an illness. Born in Brazos County he lived alone in Bryan and was a life long member of First Baptist Church. Survived by one son Robert and three brothers and an uncle. Funeral held Monday at 4 PM at McCulloch Dansby chapel. Interment in Bryan City Cemetery. Pallbearers named.
Howard Hughes, California movie producer, set a new non-stop cross country speed record by flying from Burbank, California to Newark, New Jersey in 10 hours 27 minutes 10 seconds. He averaged about 260 mph with a peak near 295 mph and used an oxygen tank for portions at altitude.
A large Bryan crowd heard Rev. Joe Percente recount his eventful life at College Avenue Baptist Church Sunday night. The former boxing champion and Roosevelt trainer narrated his rise from Cherokee roots to boxing fame, saloon keeping, politics, gang life, and eventual conversion to preaching. He plans to stay for Tuesday’s Creath Brazos Baptist Association workers conference.
Weather data recorded no rainfall for the past week with temperatures ranging from a high of 77 degrees to a low of 36 degrees. Readings list daily highs and lows, noting a dry period and stable conditions throughout.
Mrs. Luther Johnson, of Tyler, was severely scalded in the face arms and chest when a steam build up blew a lid from a hot water pail spraying boiling water over her upper body. She is reported to be resting as well as can be expected.
The Bryan Country Club hosted the annual luncheon organized by C. L. Benson Extension Service county farm agent and Mrs Alma Metcalfe home demonstrator. Speakers urged the live at home plan as a path to agricultural success in Brazos County and Texas.
Neches consolidated schools suspend classes Monday through Friday due to pneumonia influenza and measles outbreaks. Three deaths from pneumonia had occurred since Saturday as several teachers fell ill. Superintendent George Tipton ordered the closure affecting both Neches high and elementary schools.
Physicians state no spinal meningitis cases have been reported in Bryan. Dr R Henry Harison city health officer and College hospital authorities say reports of cases in the area are false. No county cases are known at this time.
An attempt to derail the Sunshine Special on the Missouri Pacific Lines near San Antonio was foiled when a switching crew found an open switch and mud on the red light signal just outside the city limits. The train was due moments later and the warning signal appeared masked.
Brazos County Rural Library received numerous new children’s books spanning a wide range of topics. The titles are late purchases and many have just been issued by publishers.
Willie Lee Stevens, a Black ex convict, was held to the grand jury on a burglary charge by Justice A. J. Buchanan Wednesday afternoon. Stevens is accused of breaking into a Black case. Bond was set at $500.

Five baptisms and eighteen confirmations in 1935 raise total communicants to 156. Three vestrymen are elected Tom Bagley J D Martin Jr and G S Parker Jr to serve three years. Delegates to the Diocesan Council Houston named Geo Chance R A Booth David Reid and Charles Hillier with alternates S M Brown Neal Dow G S Parker Jr and R H Ballerstedt.
