Secretary Wallace called a January 10-11 meeting of farm leaders to shape a program to replace the AAA after its invalidation. Washington officials warned of new taxes, possible 48 Little AAs, federal land use grants, or a domestic price quota system. The White House pressed for a substitute plan while suspending AAA operations and payments.
Mr and Mrs M R Bentley left Bryan Tuesday. They plan to attend the Texas Agricultural Workers Association annual meeting in Mineral Wells Friday and Saturday. Easters of Kurten visited Bryan Tuesday. Shoppers from Wheelock Caldwell and nearby areas were seen in Bryan Tuesday.
The week featured a cold spell with no daily high above 74 degrees and minimums near 36 to 46 degrees. Rainfall reached 2 inches on New Year's Day as rural schools reopened after a two week holiday break.
Brazos county reports a centenarian, Frank Davis, a former slave born in Fort Bend County. Now living with his daughter Blassie Lee near Smetana, he moved to Brazos County after the Civil War and remains active, hoping to set a county longevity record.
Director H H Williamson of the Extension Service wired County Agent C L Beason Monday night to stop work on all AAA programs take charge of control forms records and property and incur no further expense until advised. The order halts all work on papers for subsidy payments preparing new cotton and corn hog contracts or any AAA matter deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
E N Holmgreen of Texas A&M told Bryan Lions the AAA ruling leaves farmers with a real problem. He noted $70 million in crop reduction payments and urged an agricultural economy plan to keep farming stable amid reduced production. He compared AAA effects to wartime industry curtailments that hurt labor. Three new memberships were announced.
C. E. Griesser and H. J. Berger of the Bryan fire department were surprised with 15 year service medals at a Monday night gathering at the New York cafe. A delegation whisked them from home, and city manager R. G. Williams presided over the medal presentation after a toastmaster led reminiscences of early fires and notable incidents. The event included many department members and city officials.
John Corey of Millican is hospitalized at Wilkerson Memorial Clinic after a Sunday afternoon collision on Highway 6. His car rear ended another vehicle causing heavy front end damage.
Mrs H M McAdams a noted woman evangelist opens a two week revival at the Free Gospel Mission with Rev Bernard Pos as pastor. Miss Tommie Franklin, Free Will Baptist pastor at De Loge Missouri, joins for several nights while visiting with her people.
John Edge son of Mr and Mrs W B Edge sustained a broken left wrist while horseback riding with friends. He fell from the horse Saturday afternoon and his arm was placed in a sling for healing.
Dr T O Walton president of the Texas A and M College announces an extensive enlargement of the college hospital. The project, costing about 55 000 to 60 000 dollars, will add a new east end main wing doubling the frontage and adding about 100 beds. Construction by architect F S Giesecke begins in February and aims to be ready for the 1936 37 session.
E. W. Walker, currently visiting his mother Mrs. Bula Walker and sister Doris in Bryan, left Friday to re-enlist in the Navy for four more years. He has already served four years and aims for a 20 year career and pension. He reported for duty at Norfolk Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, and sailed from Houston, accompanied by his mother and sister.
Mrs M R Looney died at 6 o clock in Calvert after paralysis struck Christmas day. She lived with daughter Mrs Fred Smith and family and is survived by two sons and two daughters including Hugh Looney Gonzales and Will Looney Branchville. Funeral held Tuesday at 3 30 from Calvert home with burial in Calvert cemetery.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce directors decide to invite the Texas Agricultural Workers Association to hold its 1937 meeting in Bryan and College. D. W. Williams will extend the invitation, with the annual meeting set for January 16 at College in the mess hall. Marion Church of Dallas will speak and election plans proceed with eight new directors to be named.
Misses Almera and Mary Jane Dunn returned from Fort Worth where they visited their uncle Jim Dunn who has been seriously ill with pneumonia at a Fort Worth hospital. He was taken from under the oxygen tent Friday and is now recuperating. The Dunns remain cherished Bryan citizens though now living in Fort Worth.
Loss in student enrollment at Texas A and M College Station through deficient scholarship and other causes is less for the current school year to date than for the same period last year. Total dropped to date 147 versus 187 a year ago. Of the 147, 37 were for deficient scholarship. others left for various reasons. Total enrollment this year 3538, body remains near 3400 despite losses.
The Bryan WPA program reports 65 more employed women raising payroll to about 7500 dollars. Currently 53 white and 109 black women work on sewing, with four white supervisors earning 53 and 38 dollars monthly. Men total around 100 workers on street work and water mains, paid 24 dollars per month for 140 hours.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Strarypka 75 were held Monday afternoon at McCulloch Dansby chapel. Rt Rev J B Gleissner of St Josephs Catholic Church officiated. Interment followed at Mount Calvary cemetery. Surviving are two sons Charles and James and five daughters including Mrs Halubec Mrs Eigansdroff Mrs Craderfield Mrs Bulge and Mrs Carter.
Kurt Elliott of Highway No 6 north of Bryan received first aid at St Josephs hospital after an axe glanced and cut through the left foot between the toes while he was cutting and stacking cordwood. He returned home after treatment.
Brazos County ginnings for the 1935 cotton crop reached 13 595 bales through December 13, up from 11 576 bales on the same date in 1934.
Reed Green Dan Carr and Les lie and J. D. Binford charged with hog theft in Justice A. J. Buchanan's court. Sheriff R. W. Nunn and Deputy Offa Williams made the arrests. Will White charged with toting a pistol. Herman Douglas and Arthur Davis jailed for four turkey thefts. William Wallace arrested for possession of three pints of bonded whiskey. a Missouri native and former Texas A. and M. College student.
Field agents and headquarters at Texas A and M College suspend all AAA operations after Supreme Court ruling. About 200 AAA employees in Bankhead Office and related divisions in College Station are laid off or reassigned pending further notice.
