The article reports a call from Daniel Russell and George G. Chance for the community to resume responsibility for relief. A Good Cheer drive will open after a Friday meeting of interested organizers, with expectations of a liberal, swift response and no prolonged campaign. BRYAN BOOSTER.
Bryan residents reported visits from J. H. McCallum of Tabor on business, F. M. Wilson near Normangee, and Geo. Stephan who plans a San Antonio departure for a Mexico trip with J. S. Kelly of Chicago, ahead of the Texas Bottlers convention. Charles B. Stillwell of San Antonio stayed with the Myers family as uncle to Mrs. Myers.
Ed Chytil, Edge farmer charged with theft of chickens, waived an examining trial and was held to the grand jury. Bond set at $500. Chytil had pleaded guilty previously to theft of two cows and received a two year sentence in state prison, suspended on good behavior by Judge W C Davis.
For the Forr Graham Post No. 159 American Legion, the fair board organized with M. Lawrence Jr. elected president and Henry Ross secretary. A Dallas trip was set to arrange the carnival for the fair. July Fourth events were assigned speakers, candidates, sports, barbecue, a car giveaway, and a dance.
Benchley applicants may obtain blanks and information by visiting the post office. They are asked to call at the Benchley office for forms and guidance on the process. The notice directs potential applicants to secure the necessary blank forms locally.
The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce elected officers for the year. George G. Chance was named president with Dr. T. D. Brooks as first vice president and F. L. Henderson as second vice president. Pat Newton will serve as treasurer. Directors present included George A. Adams and Daniel Russell. new board members are the last eight listed.
Attorney General William Mc Craw will address the joint Faculty and Former Student luncheon at the A and M Former Students Association spring meeting on May 2 and 3. Marion B Church of Dallas will introduce him. Reunions for classes 1926 1921 1916 1911 1906 1901 1896 1891 and 1886 include golden and silver anniversaries with Major General Andrew Moses invited to attend.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce officers elected Tuesday morning. George G. Chance named president and D. L. Wilson secretary for his third term. Also named were Dr. T. D. Brooks and F. L. Henderson as vice presidents and Pat Newton as treasurer.
Odea DeHart, who escaped Livas county jail Sept 28, was recaptured near Fort Brown by Deputy Sheriff Offa Williams and Wade Cox. He had enlisted with the 12th Cavalry at Fort Brown and was held for Sheriff Nunn. DeHart had been arrested in Waco over a car theft tied to Frank Ritchie and was indicted by the fall grand jury.
Tom Waite alias Waltce Douglas alias Bubba Douglas, arrested by Officers Reed Franks and Phillips, faces charges of five burglaries in Bryan and an arson attempt at Rosalie Davis home to force her return. Gerson, Patronalla, Tatum, Carr, and Bush residences linked. value nearly $1,000 in one case. Co‑suspected burglary in Franklin tied by clothing.
A barn and a garage were destroyed by fire on the Tom Gray property on West 15th Street. The cause is not yet determined and no loss estimate is available.
John Merka of Brazos county died after a car accident at Highways 6 and 21 in North Bryan. He was injured when the car overturned and crushed his chest. Funeral services set for Reliance church. He leaves four sons and seven daughters and a large extended family.
In Brazos county December activity shows three men worked on fever tick eradication with about 65.45 dollars spent by the Live Stock Sanitary Commission. 319 herds and 3,794 cattle were inspected or dipped. none were visibly infected. Twenty seven herds and 190 cattle await further treatment. no quarantine violations. The program, under R. E. Smith, continues until tick infection is cleared. Salaries for two workers are paid by the U S Bureau of Animal Industry.
On Saturday night at 9:45 p m A M Waldrop died at his East 29th street home after months of illness. Born December 16 1871 in Bryan he was 64 years old at death and a leading figure in business education religion and civic life. He helped found A M Waldrop & Co and served on the Bryan City school board for 30 years including a term as president. City offices closed and a large crowd gathered at First Methodist Church to honor him.
M A Barnett owner of a mill and grist mill at Edge was killed instantly when an explosion hurled millstone fragments and other machinery. His brother Alvin Barnett was badly wounded and taken to a Bryan clinic for care. Funeral services for M A Barnett were held at Mount Pleasant cemetery near Edge. He is survived by his widow, four daughters and one son.
The Brazos County Federation of Church Societies elected new officers. Mrs Mills P Walker of College Avenue Baptist becomes president. First Methodist’s Mrs Ben Priddy is first vice president. Mrs C G Wetter of First Presbyterian is second vice president. Mrs J D Benson of First Christian is third vice president. Mrs Charles Edge of St Andrews Episcopal is secretary treasurer. Mrs Walter Holmes of Free Will Baptist is corresponding secretary. Mrs Charles S Myers of First Baptist is parliamentarian.
Bryan florist J Coulter Smith reports thefts along Highway 6 from Bryan to south of College as part of a statewide beautification plan. Bird of paradise and other shrubs are being uprooted over several weeks, prompting police checks and patrol involvement to identify and stop the thieves.
Sheriff R W Nunn and Deputy Williams arrested Jeff Steptoe and Robinson Crusoe, two Negroes, Saturday evening for violating state liquor laws. They were jailed on bootlegging charges after officers found half a gallon of corn liquor and two small drinking glasses. Crusoe had previous bootlegging conviction with a suspended prison term for good behavior.
A. Schulman and Mrs. Rose Davidson received marriage licenses, formalizing their union in the local records.
Rev E Sterl Phinney of the Free Will Baptist church spoke to the Bry an Lions club in line with a long standing policy of delivering inspirational addresses. A moment of silence and prayer followed in memory of A M Waldrop who died Saturday night. Roland Dansby urged support for the Good Cheer Drive. The attendance prize of 1 was doubled and given to L L Pistole for the Good Cheer Fund. Cards of appreciation from Dr and Mrs Lamar Jones Reva Maniloff and Mrs J Coulter Smith were read. Fred Zalmanzig of the San Antonio Civic Opera Company sang two solos with Mrs Roy Danforth at the piano. Dr W H Andrew announced a Boy Scouts Court of Honor for Friday Jan 24 7 30 to 8 30 in the District Court room. Mr Dansby and W E F Paulson were named to assist Dr Andrew.
Three flue fires drew city firefighters Saturday afternoon with no damage. Incidents occurred at the homes of Miss Lila Shelburne Mollie Bell and Queenie Taylor, all described as Negro. The fire department logged 47 alarms in the past year and has answered 14 calls so far this year.
Mrs. C. E. West of Hearne wife of C. E. West a Southern Pacific conductor died Tuesday morning at St Josephs hospital after a several day illness. She leaves a husband three children and the body was moved to the family home in Hearne for funeral arrangements possibly at 3 p m Wednesday with interment in Hearne cemetery.
King George V dies at Sandringham England after a four day illness. He is 70 with Queen Mary and the Prince of Wales present at his bedside. The body will lie in state at Westminster Hall and a funeral is planned with burial at Windsor. The new king Edward VIII begins accession process as Britain mourns.
A. J. Johnson, a Black man, was held to the July term after a charge of cattle theft linked to Seigert. Bond set at $300 by A. J. Buchanan.
