Benchley Mourns Elder Citizen Barney Mitchell

BENCHLEY JAN 8 After weeks absent I return with notes from our town. Mrs W H Peyton visited Bremond, J R Rice and Blair Oklahoma kin spent holidays here, Bill Peyton and family traveled here briefly, Miss Mary Stewart of Howe visited relatives. The community records the death of Barney Mitchell about 90, Ireland native and Benchley elder, who lived here years, survived by four nieces and a great nephew. He had stayed with Mrs Sikes for 12 years after his sister-in-law died and was laid to rest in the family burying ground Sunday.

Tabor Girl's Club Plans Party and New Club for Boys

County Tax Office Busy Issuing 1925 Car Tags

The county tax collector's office is crowded as people wait to be served for real and personal taxes poll taxes and car licenses. Most of the work consists of issuing 1925 car tags with dozens ahead in line. By 10 am the total new tags issued reached 1 025.

Thomas Holden Pioneer of Brazos County Dies

Thomas Madison Holden, a longtime Brazos County resident and pioneer born October 23, 1846 in Rutherford County Tennessee, died December 31 1924 at the home of his son Walter Holden on College Road. He leaves a daughter Mrs W G Blanton and two sons Horace Holden and Walter Holden. Funeral services were held January 1 1925 at 2 p m at the Holden home, with interment at Alexander cemetery.

Parker-Astin Fire Prevents Heavy Loss

At about 10 30 Tuesday night the Parker Astin Hardware store fire alarm sounded and a truck responded. Live coals near a stove burned a wooden ash container causing minor damage limited to an eight inch square area. Buckets of water sufficed as hoses were ready but not needed. The loss is estimated at a few dollars.

Mr and Mrs Willie Johnson hosted a New Year dinner party at their home on Thursday honoring Miss Clara Woodard of Resse sister of Mrs Johnson. Allen Smith and wife return from three weeks abroad

Mr and Mrs Allen Smith arrived by the noon train Sunday after a three week visit to Chicago Philadelphia Boston New York and New Orleans. They combined a business trip with a pleasure trip but Mr Smith contracted flu and an ear condition on leaving New Orleans. Mrs Smith wired Dr P M Raysor who met them in Houston. After a minor operation Sunday afternoon Mr Smith rests better at home.

Dean E. J. Kyle Returns From Hunting Trip Near Carrizzo Springs

Dean E. J. Kyle of the School of Agriculture, A. and M. College, reports from Carrizzo Springs after a three day hunting trip. He stayed at E. F. Hamilton’s ranch and killed one buck and limited quail each day on the way home. Hamilton owns a large West Texas sheep operation and is wintering 9,000 lambs in Illinois and Kansas.

Knights of Pythias elect officers at Tuesday meeting

The local Knights of Pythias elected officers at their Tuesday night session. Lonnie Locke was named chancellor commander with R C Franks as vice chancellor commander and R E Kellner as prelate. Others include M Birdwell master at arms, Robert Phillips inner guard, William Griffin outer guard, T A Cloud keeper of records and seals, Pat Newton master of exchequer, J T Maloney master of finance, and J E Gammon representative to the Grand Lodge. Installation is set for next Tuesday night January 6.

Phelps-Satterwhite Nuptials Celebrate Caldwell Wedding

Howard S. Satterwhite and Miss Maud Phelps were married at Caldwell at 11 o clock Wednesday morning. Afterward they returned to Bryan for a turkey wedding dinner at the groom's parents home and departed by 2:55 H. and T. C. train for a brief honeymoon in Houston and Galveston.

Military Funeral for Jno F Kosh Held at Catholic Church

Military ceremonies accompanied the funeral of Jno F Kosh Jr formerly of A and M College who died in Bryan Hospital. A caisson from the college unit carried the casket from church to the cemetery in Bryan.

Mrs Anna Lobello dies after illness in Bryan home

Mrs Anna Lobello wife of L Lobello died Wednesday December 31 at 5 30 p m at the home of her son Sam Lobello in Bryan after about a week and a half of illness with flu and pneumonia. Born March 25 1861 in Rocca San Giovanni Italy she came to America in 1884 settling in Bryan. Survived by husband three sons Leon Jr Nick and Sam Lobello a daughter Mrs Charles Todaro eight grandchildren one sister Mrs Nick Ventura of Dallas one brother Chance Palmer of Dallas and three sisters and a brother in Italy. The Dodge sedan stolen from in front of the Halsell home on College Avenue last Saturday night or Sunday morning was found in San Antonio. It was turned over to the Bodge Brothers agency there by the Texas Automobile Dealers Association. Kay Hassell plans to go to San Antonio to bring the car back to Bryan.

Ish Seen As Likely 1925 Waco Captain

Frank Ish of Waco High, a star quarterback in his first season, is expected to be elected captain for 1925. He is described as the greatest high school place-kicker in the state and a standout gridiron talent. Insanity Case Moved to San Antonio by Sheriff Conlee

John Williams of Cawthon adjudged insane weeks ago by a sanity court in Bryan. Presiding Judge H. O. Ferguson with a jury, Williams was taken by train to the state asylum in San Antonio Friday, under custody of Sheriff Jess Conlee. The sheriff returned to Bryan last night.

Boy Scouts Hold Troop Meeting Friday Night

The Boy Scouts of C R Gardner's troop met at the Scout Home Friday night at seven. They discussed troop business, played some, and dismissed. Mrs Dansby Keeps Open House On New Year Day
