Unconventional Georgia Senator Walter F George Biography

Walter F. George of Georgia rose from farm boy to jurist and statesman. Born 1878 in Preston he earned Mercer University and law degrees then served as solicitor general judge of the Cordele circuit and Georgia Supreme Court. He briefly paused as Rebecca Felton seated before taking office in 1923 and won reelection in 1927.

Brenham Rotary Hosts Intercity Meeting with Clubs From Ten Cities

Brenham Rotary Club welcomed representatives from Houston Galveston Austin Bryan Hearne Goose Creek Hallettsville Huntsville Port Lavaca and others to the Brenham Country Club for an intercity gathering Friday April 21. About 300 people attended a barbecue lunch including 16 from Bryan. Col C C Todd chaired the program introducing candidates for district governor and former governors. Music featured solos by Rudolph Cole and novelty numbers by the Huntsville Misses Landes. The event highlighted Gen Sam Houston’s life and leadership as presented by O B Martin of the A and M Extension Service.

Build New Homes and Civic Improvements Spread Through Bryan

New homes are under construction and old houses are being painted across Bryan. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Hensarling Jr will soon occupy a new brick home in Travis Park. A duplex on College Road near Cliff C. Edge is underway. The Edge property owns the duplex site. The Tyler Haswell home is being renovated with a fresh cream and white colonial color scheme.

Conference Sets Plan For Smetana Community Work

Smetana 4-H club members teachers and leaders met with County Agent C L Beason to map a coordinated program linking 4-H activities agriculture home making and livestock and seeking better cooperation to avoid duplication. Benson urges aligning with A and M College and other agencies. A similar meeting is planned at Kurten Thursday night for the same purpose.

Melvin on April 24 reports A Benson fed 450 lambs using Extension Service methods and cleared 650 dollars profit from the trial.

Mexican Baptist Church Equipped With Furniture

The new Mexican Baptist church on the city’s northern church lot near McDowell’s gin is ready for occupancy. At about 24 by 40 feet the building will soon host a growing Mexican congregation with furnishings being installed this week. Rev. Garcia and helpers thank Bryan residents for support that made the church possible. Dedication services are planned. The church supports a Sunday School under Raymond Torres, youth and children groups, and a Woman’s Missionary Society.

Car Turn Over Injures Wife of College Dean

Mrs. T. D. Brooks wife of Dr. T. D. Brooks dean of the college of arts and sciences and graduate school of A and M College is hospitalized in Houston with severe bruises and some broken ribs after a wreck on the Houston Palacios highway. Dr. Brooks was with her and phoned from College Station stating she is progressing satisfactorily and will return to work Tuesday. Also traveling from Palacios after the San Jacinto Day celebration were Mrs. E. D. Head Mrs. H. H. Orem and Judge and Mrs. Elbert Roberts.

Car Turnover After Passing Incident Injures Three

Roberts driving tried to pass a car but swerved back when meeting another vehicle. The steering appeared to lock and the car overturned injuring Mrs. Brooks Mrs. Head and Mrs. Orem. They were taken to Hermann Hospital. Mrs. Orem suffered a fractured collarbone and was sent home. the other two remained in hospital with initial fears of internal injuries subsiding for Mrs. Brooks.

Joe Wrenn of Normangee, a renowned violinist in the county, will appear on the Kurten Community Club program Saturday night May 6 according to County Agent C L Benson. Arthur Yeager is president of the Kurten club.
