Texas land grants and Stephen F Austin cited in Lions Club talk
A Lions Club discussion contends Texas history centers on land development and speculation. The speaker notes Stephen F Austin as a pivotal yet controversial figure in land expansion, emphasizing legal steps and land deals shaped the state’s growth.
Two-Part Life of Austin Figures in Texas History
A lecture by Dr. Asbury traced Austin's life from land deals to a religious turn with the Galveston Bay Company tied to Sam Houston as their lawyer. He suggested land speculation helped fuel Texas history and the revolution though critics blamed it on other motives. The club noted Prof. Asbury could not finish his nine hour talk. A May 1 ladies night with minstrel guests was planned, with similar events discussed for Calvert Huntsville or Brenham. Attendees included Roland Dansby Sankey Park J E Angell and C C Todd Jr, with Dillingham winning the attendance prize.
