Mr and Mrs W S Brending who resided in Bryan while he served as night clerk at the La Salle hotel left for Temple. Brending resigns to join the National Electric Co of Dallas with Temple as headquarters. Also mention J C Culpepper of Cameron and Seldon Ellis visiting League City on business.
Bry an residents and businessmen press for stronger protection as two men G F Singletary and Hudson Myers are added to the police force. S. E. Locke retires as night watchman. R L Franks becomes night watchman. Changes start April 15 and new schedule boosts post midnight coverage. Election for charter amendment set May 22 to fund public utility plant with 50 000 and allocate net earnings to general city needs including schools and departments. Filter system for city water also discussed.
Fred L. Cavitt receives a certificate of appreciation from the Brazos County Red Cross for 41 years as treasurer. The document, issued at national headquarters in Washington, D C, bears signatures of Franklin D. Roosevelt John Barton Payne Mabel T. Boardman and M Bethany.
Houston county District Attorney T. B. Greenwood Jr. orders a thorough probe into Bill Orsak’s allegations of torture while jailed in Crockett after his Saturday arrest. County Attorney Oak McKenzie supplied information and pledged full efforts to verify the claims. A warrant had been issued for H. T. Glover of Huntsville on false imprisonment charges, and the sheriff plans to arrest him upon return.
Brazos county and the city of Bryan prepare a complete delinquent taxpayer list as of February 1. County tax collector Guy Harris says publication follows a commissioners court resolution authorizing release when ready. The list should be available in about two weeks.
Three white men believed from Houston attempted to rob the Gordon-Sewell warehouse on South Bryan Avenue late Sunday afternoon. They gained entry, triggered the alarm, and fled to a car parked some distance away. The vehicle, seen driving south on Beck Street and later College Avenue, had a Harris County license tag under police investigation. Saws and a bit and brace were found at the scene.
Entry gained by removing rear door boards at White Auto Supply. One or more tires and possibly several smaller articles reported stolen. No injuries noted. Police investigating to identify suspects and recover stolen items.
City Manager R G Williams announced at Austin that emergency relief projects for street improvements and municipal playground rehabilitation were approved. About 14 miles of dirt streets will be upgraded and the playground complex including the clubhouse pool dock and boat facilities will get repairs. The program expected to employ around 400 men with a short hour week, funds anticipated by May 1 or earlier. Work to start Monday but not on full scale until funds arrive.
Texarkana April 17 Pres ident E L Kurth of Lufkin announced the East Texas Chamber of Commerce convention schedule for April 22 23 and 24. The program includes a fast Texas golf tournament at Texarkana Country Club air show at Texarkana airport a religious mass meeting at Texarkana municipal auditorium with Dallas A Capella Singers and Baylor University quadruplets. Monday features a general session at Paramount Theater with an invocation by Tom Ed Wilbanks a welcome address by Josh E Morris and other Chamber remarks.
Mrs. W E Neeley county superintendent reported last week that Bowman school received $200 in federal aid. Applications for aid for 10 other schools have been filed, but Bowman is the first and only one heard from so far.
County commissioners canvassed election returns for county school board and district trustees. Names elected include N. C. Cole from Precinct 1, C. M. Bethany from county at large, Millican with C. M. Sawyer and A. T. Langford, Lena Allen, August Docker, J. H. Dowling, W. C. Raines, A. M. Hartsfield, J. C. Merka, Otto Plagens, Frank Worsham who resigned, Frank Rosier, Joe Merka, Ward Mooring, M. F. Mirabella, Paul Holubec, Lee Wilson, C. B. Wooten, J. G. Parsons, J. J. Holik, J. H. McDonald, A. D. Kopetsky, and other district results noted.
Joe Messina and Tine Muse of Brazos County received a marriage license from County Clerk Clyde Goen sealing their upcoming nuptials.
Nine members including Mrs. Cofer and Mrs. Edna Abbott Shelton attended the all day meeting of the Public Health Nurses of Texas at the home of Mrs. D. B. Cofer in College Station. Seven visiting members listed include Miss Atkinson, Mrs. Loveless, Mrs. Powell, Miss Cunningham, Miss Celia Moore, Miss Lilly Lelacheur, and Miss McCullough. The meeting was called and presided over by Mrs. Powell, president.
The Newspaper for Industrialization cautions Soviet economic bodies to shift from preferring American materials and equipment for the rest of the second five year plan. It warns the government not to be coerced into a debt settlement as the U S law on loans tightens relations amid ongoing bilateral negotiations.
President Roosevelt today received a delegation of Texas newspaper editors and expressed hope to visit Texas next year for fishing. Lowry Martin of Corsicana presented a Texas state flag to the President, who said he would place it in the White House library.
All plans are complete for the American Legion picnic for members and their families to be held Thursday at 7 o clock. Each family will bring a basket picnic lunch.
Rev. Philip C. McGahey, four years at Snyder First Baptist, accepts call to Navasota First Baptist pastorate. to start May 1. Navasota seat vacated after W. N. Purcell resigned February 1. McGahey, Baylor graduate, led Snyder church with 700 members and 350 in Sunday school.
The White Cross seal sale to fund crippled children relief in Texas is under way with Mrs. A R Emery and Mrs. B D Marburger leading in Bryan and College. The fund supplements a 10000 annual state appropriation for diagnostic clinics hospital treatment and other costs. An estimated 20000 crippled children exist in Texas many affected by infantile paralysis. Daddy Allen of Elyria Ohio founder of the movement will broadcast to rally support. The International Society for Crippled Children plans a May Montreal convention with delegates from 26 countries.
Miss Alice Barrows testified to the House committee that Dr. William A. Wirt’s claim of a dinner party revelation was false She denied any mention of Roosevelt as a Kerensky figure or of a Stalin replacement or of Rexford Tugwell and said no guest besides Wirt could speak on inflation.
The prize winning play Inspiration by Mrs. Ben G. O Neal was presented by a cast directed by Otis Gayle with assistants. Cast included Ina Harrison Barbara Harrison Betty Syptak and Lilly Rush Walker. Rehearsals for the next comedy His Majesty the Queen begin after the meeting with a larger cast. Planning for summer activities was discussed.
Postal receipts in Houston for March showed a 13 percent increase over February 1933. Postmaster Roy Nichols called the uptick a sign of improving business as the local office dispatched over 1,000,000 letters in the three days before Easter, second only to Christmas peaks.
G H Draper a senior at A and M College spoke on Brooding Baby Chicks at the Steep Hollow community meeting Saturday evening. R C Franks Lions rural chairman arranged musical numbers by Myrtle Robertson and Kath leen Stuart with Robertson on marimba and Stuart on piano. Readings were given by Vera Lightsey, Steep Hollow school teacher who presided for the night.
About 20 men were put to work Monday morning at the Municipal Playgrounds starting repairs to the clubhouse and cleaning up the grounds. It is expected this force will be augmented as funds allow. No street improvement work has begun yet due to lack of money, but is expected to resume in the next week or ten days.
The Millican home demonstration club elected Mrs. C. B. McGregor president, replacing Mrs. Jessie Tolbert who moves to Palestine. New county home agent Alma Wade Metcalf led a cheese demonstration. Twenty five members attended with thirteen former members, seven new members and five visitors including two from Manila.
Book by O. M. Roberts, former Texas governor, given to Bryan Carnegie Library by Charles Behr for its Texas history collection. Published 1892, includes lectures and addresses on causes of the Civil War and evolving U.S. government through 1890, with a dedication noting April 27, 1895.
J F Casey county councilor Commerce will head a Brazos county delegation to the eighth annual Etex Convention in Texarkana April 22 23 and 24. The program lists speakers including Jesse Jones W R Boyd Oscar Johnson Pat Neff PF M Law and Josh Lee. Governors from four states invited to the state line dinner. The event features Queen Etex V crown candidates and a Texas Centennial opera program with choirs and performers from Baylor University and other groups.
More than 1909 students and teachers traveled to Texas A and M for the 17th annual Smith Hughes contests. Sanger High School won the sweepstakes, with Beeville and Breckenridge also taking multiple firsts in shops terracing and other subjects. State superintendent L A Woods attended, praising work and urging further improvement.
Seed loans totaling 137 in number and 8305 dollars were issued in Brazos County led by district supervisor Henry Bell. Farmers are urged to apply at chamber of commerce offices before April 30 with loan amounts from 10 to 250 dollars and a 750 dollar limit per place.
S. E. Asbury, longtime state chemist, spoke to the Bryan Lions Club at their weekly luncheon. He presented excerpts from his Texas history discussion and emphasized the link between land deals and state development.
