Wynne Lay of Houston stopped in Bryan Monday afternoon and stayed overnight with his uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. Tyler Haswell. Mrs. M. W. Sims with her daughter Mrs. Chas. H. Mills of Corsicana traveled to Bryan Monday. Mrs. Sims and Mrs. Sims Jr. left for Houston to attend the Fourth District T. F. W. C. annual meeting this week. Mrs. Mills will spend the week with her brother M. W. Sims Jr. at his plantation on the Brazos River.

Bryan and Brazos county voters will hear candidates for county and district offices during Bryan's Second Annual Rodeo. Law Henderson will MC the candidate speeches starting at 7 p.m. with rodeo at 8:15 p.m. each evening across April 26 27 and 28.
The scale of the search for John Dillinger widened as nearly 100 men, aided by aircraft, scoured northern Wisconsin wilds. Authorities suspect he may be hiding there or in Minneapolis or St Paul. three deputy sheriffs clashed with three men in St Paul suburbs, with two dead and four wounded in the same period.
Two men robbed the Gulf Refining station on South College avenue Saturday night after knocking operator Pete Catalena to the floor. They stole between 15 and 20 dollars plus five gallons of gas and fled in a car after one assailant took the change from a $5 payment and the cash from the register.
Wesley College in Greenville announced John Blackburn superintendent of schools at Farmersville was named president at a trustees meeting. Blackburn, a Wesley College alumnus, previously taught at the institution.
City fireman John Stasny raises six week old goldfish and notes fierce cannibalism as larger fry prey on smaller companions. He relates past losses to water changes and suggests using water snails to purify the bowl while the youngsters grow.
More than 100 Texas publishers and business leaders toured Chicago during a two day stop. They were welcomed by Rufus C. Dawes and officials of the Century of Progress and Ford, toured the Ford Exposition Building, and praised Chicago’s fair preparations. The group planned return visits and proceeded to Washington on the Texas Press Full House special.
The Bryan city school board, at a Wednesday meeting, named two new teachers for white schools Stephen F. Austin High and Travis Elementary and elected a new principal for the colored elementary school. Miss Wesa Weddington heads Stephen F. Austin with staff including Sam Crenshaw, A. E. Jones and Fred L. Sloop. Miss Leola Holtzer resigns. Miss Rucker moves to science and public speaking and will earn a master’s from Northwestern. Miss Mary Andrews leaves Travis. Miss Mary Jewel Stewart, with ten years’ experience, will take her place. Bowie and Kemp faculties remain unchanged. Sadie Thomas moves to Kemp. Edward H. Knox becomes colored elementary principal, succeeding L. A. Nash. Knox is a Wilberforce University graduate.
More than 160 friends gathered at the Texas A and M College banquet room in College Station on Monday night for an informal dinner honoring Dr. and Mrs. W. B. Bizzell now president of the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Bizzell, A and M president 1914 to 1925, praised the college’s progress and was welcomed by President T. C. Walton.
Frank Chiappetta aged 39 years 3 months 23 days died at his Houston home after a brief illness. The body will be moved to Bryan for a 10 o clock Friday service at St Anthony church. Rev Peter William will conduct services at church and grave in Bryan Catholic cemetery. He was born in Brazos county and survived by widow two children five brothers and one sister. Survivors include Chiappetta brothers in Houston and Joe Chiappetta of Waco and Mrs Tony Sausage of Bryan. McCulloch Dansby funeral directors coordinate arrangements. Friends invited to attend.
The Daily Revised Manual of Emergency Recovery Agencies and Facilities will be kept at Brazos County Red Cross secretary office in City Hall. Issued by the National Emergency Council to inform the public about federal emergency activities and agency locations, it will be available through the local Red Cross chapter for inquiries and guidance.
Thirty Brazos county women and girls attended a pickle making demonstration led by county home demonstration agent Mrs Alma Metcalfe at City Hall. The session covered pickle preparation fluids and proper sealing. Afterward, home demonstration agents from nearby counties met with Miss Mildred Horton to plan upcoming work, with attendees including Miss Viola McKenzie Austin county Miss Virginia King Falls county and others.
The May Fete sponsored by the St. Paul’s Episcopal church Wee Guild in Navasota is set for May 3 in the school auditorium. Mrs. J. R. Gaines will direct with Mrs. Sam Steele assisting as plans aim to make this the best May Fete yet. The senior high queen will be announced soon and will select the duchesses who choose their escorts. Bryan is noted for contributing many court members in the past.
County Attorney Oak McKenzie files charges of maintaining and operating slot machines against Frank McGee W V Mercer John Webb and W T Franklin in district court. Machines were seized from McGee drug store and Mercers Sweet Shop by Chief K T Tillis and are held at the county jail. Webb and Franklin are described as lessors or owners. Money from the machines reportedly to be given to charity.
In Texas, a new relief program directed by Marie Dresden of the Texas Relief Commission begins immediately to help families become self-sustaining. Some not suited to farm projects may stay on work relief or receive direct aid, as displaced tenant farmers result from crop reduction and shifts in relief rolls.
A special College Avenue Baptist church program honored aging congregants on Tuesday. Notables included nine mothers aged 70 plus, six at 75+, three 80+, with Mrs. William Rigby the oldest and Mrs. J. M. Bullock Sr. the largest family. Rev. J. M. Bradford spoke on devotion, and Mrs. Rigby and others received flowers.
Miss Rosemary Knobel of Bryan will perform a special dance for the King and Queen at the Hearne May Fete on Wood Field May 1. Miss Maurine Williamson of Bryan is named a duchess and will join Duke Curt Porter of Memphis at the event.
R A Crawford of the Normangee Star reports from Bryan that Leon County's beer sale question passed by 9 votes after earlier indications of a double digit lead. The result confirms Leon County moved to wet status following the county vote.
R C Franks secretary of the Bryan Lions Club will speak at District 25 Convention in Galveston May 4 and 5 at the Buccaneer Hotel. W M Sparks plans to attend as well and praise is voiced for the club’s choice of speakers. Roland Dansby delivers a humorous classification talk referencing Henry VIII era laundry and starch usage.
In Crockett on April 24 a negro, Frank Brisby, is jailed for murder as J. M Ellis, a white Crockett businessman, dies from a courtroom shooting. Ben Ellis, nephew of J. M Ellis, fired at Brisby during jury selection, was released on bond after court cleared. Brisby had been indicted for killing J. M Ellis.
Joe Jackson and Oliva Walker both described as negroes of Burleson county have been licensed to marry by County Clerk Clyde Goen.
The Agricultural Adjustment Administration seeks to increase rough feed and pasture crops in Texas to reduce cash crop production. Extension workers note this lowers costs and outputs for meat milk and wool, conserves soil, and fits a balanced farm program. O B Martin urges combining pastures hay and silage with home manufactures for a stronger rural Texas future.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce directors urged creating a city and county hospital to supplement existing services. Maniloff backed city cooperation, a free ward for the poor, and physician support for nonpaying patients. He will push further study through the Public Health committee.
The Bureau of Roads approved paving 4.4 miles of Highway No 6 south of College to opposite Wellborn at an estimated cost of 123000. Bids will be advertised in a week or ten days and paving should start within a month. Federal funds totaling six to seven million dollars for Texas highway improvements will be spent under the highway commission, giving Bryan and Brazos County residents hope for further paving this year.
Gas thieves hit the Sinclair station at Parker and 28th Street operated by Joe Havel on Saturday night. The pump was broken and an undetermined amount of gasoline was stolen.
STEPHEVILLE April 23. Ed Bryan renowned artist hopes to regain health and resume painting. The 60 year old painter once noted among America's and Europe's greats has spent a decade at his Stephenville ranch battling ill health. He remains hopeful he can contribute to art again as a painter and instructor at the Cincinnati Art Academy.
