Negro Health Week Observed by Bryan Negroes

The sixth anniversary of National Negro Health Week was celebrated by Bryan area Black residents with health sermons at churches. At public schools Principal Kemp led health instruction assemblies and health songs, while Drs. Thompson and Hammond spoke. Pupils organized church committees and conducted Friday cleanups and a pageant titled Disease Vanished by Health at the A. M. E. church.

Religious League of Wen Organized at Meeting Sunday

A second mass meeting at Carneg Library formed The Men’s Religious League to boost religious study and Christian fellowship in Bryan. Officers named were E J Jenkins president E E McAdams vice president and Thurston Cole secretary treasurer. Meetings set for the first Sunday each month with no dues and voluntary funds.

Woman's Club Edge plants trees to beautify school grounds

Under the Women Home Demonstration Club of Edge the community gathered about 150 people to plant 80 cedars and pecan trees around the school yard fence. Flower beds were added and walks outlined with flowers expected to bloom year round. Club women and club girls served lunch.

Funeral services held for Mrs Eliza Eastland Graham

Mrs. Eliza Eastland Graham 85 died Saturday night at her daughter's home in this city after long residence in Forest Mississippi. Funeral services were at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. W N Shell with choir soloist Mrs J Webb Howell. Burial followed in Forest with pallbearers named. Confederate constancy and Christian devotion praised by the pastor.

Former Bryan Citizen Visits Relatives Here

Sam Johnson born and reared in Bryan now of San Angelo Texas is visiting cousin W R Sanders and family in Bryan. About twenty years ago his father W R Johnson worked for Sanders Bros and Co in Bryan before moving west for his wife's health. The Johnsons remain notable to Bryan and Brazos county residents.

Boy Scouts Hold Notable Meeting At Sunday Session

The Bryan Boy Scouts convened at the Scout House Sunday at two. Troops filled the room as plans for Boys Week from April 29 to May 3 were discussed. They thanked O. E. Saunders for donated bird pictures to be framed as house ornaments. Troop No. 1 received badges and insignia. L. G. Jones praised them and S. E. Eberstadt sent notes from Virginia praising the program.

Missionary Society at First Methodist Church Holds Business Session

The Woman's Missionary Society of the First Methodist Church held a Monday afternoon meeting with about forty members present. Reports from all five groups showed active, effective work. a death resolutions committee was formed. federation plans were adopted with J. N. Goodwin named vice president. an inter racial work committee was appointed. invitation extended to women of Bryan churches for April 28.

A large turnout at Kurten community club meeting Saturday night led to postponement due to absent officers and program participants. Attending Bryan residents included County Agent C L Benson, John Cobb, and Harry Prager Jr as the wagon show productions took over the evening.

Miss Rae Montgomery Ill at Fort Worth

Miss Rae Montgomery, a Fort Worth schoolteacher and former local instructor, is seriously ill in Fort Worth after being called home Friday noon. Her sister Miss Allie Montgomery, a local East Side School teacher, is expected home tonight. A telephone update says she is much improved.

Men’s Club Formed At Edge Literary Meeting

At the Edge Literary Society meeting Friday night the men formed a new league for community betterment. Ed Payne was named chairman and W C Hill secretary as the group plans to handle local affairs. The auditorium was crowded to capacity.

Epworth Leagues Seniors Host Friday Night Party

The Senior Epworth League of the First Methodist Church held a party in the young men’s class room with about 10 couples attending. Chaperones were Mes dames E. W. Crenshaw J. B. Pria dy and H. N. Cochran. Decorations featured wistaria and white, fruit punch and grape drinks. A theft of sandwiches and a silver ladle was noted. The event included games and socializing with leap year proposals noted.

Adams Home From Florida Visit Returns Refreshed

George A. Adams of the Insurance Agency of that name in this city returned home Friday morning from Orlando where he had been for a little over two weeks visiting his brother Quinlin Adams and family. He stopped in Montgomery and New Orleans on the way. He noted Florida roads and that state convicts are used on highways. Orange trees bloomed though fruit rotted on the ground due to low prices. He resumes work refreshed with new vigor.

Mrs. J. F. Armstrong of Los Angeles California visits Bryan relatives at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Hanway. Born and raised in Bryan she is remembered as Miss Jennie Hanway daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Hanway. She is a niece of Mr. Hanway and of Mayor Tyler Haswell.

Delphian Society Concludes Year With Age of Chivalry Discussion

The Delphian Society completed its year with a program on The Age of Chivalry led by Mrs. J. A. Held. Members praised the Epochs of Progress study and will begin Drama next year as a background. A new board will be elected at the April 18 meeting and retiring officers will present final reports.
