President Johnson At St Louis Major Missouri history note
In St Louis on September 8 1866 Andrew Johnson spoke from the Walnut Street portico of the Southern Hotel defiant before a hostile Congress. The visit marked his Swing Around the Circle tour with a vast river fleet and festive reception. His impromptu remarks fueled later impeachment debates as Missouri's role in the episode is recalled.
