Rural schools across the country are described as free in name but funded by taxpayers and local owners. Albert Simpson aged 26 of Milan was shot and killed by city marshal John Moore during a resisting arrest near City Hall. Two bullets struck Simpson, one passing through. a bystander Bill Turner was wounded in the leg. Moore was beaten before seizing his pistol. an inquest began Saturday and was postponed to Monday with Moore exonerated.
Mrs Mark Gooch entertained with a bridge luncheon at her home north of Purdin last Wednesday. The two course noon meal pleased guests. Mrs John Myers won high score among attendees including Miss Katherine Hoover Akron Ohio Miss Orryl Adams Browning Mrs Joe Edens Mrs Harrison Nichols Mrs Charles McNally Mrs Low Street and Mrs Henry Hale.
A large gathering at J. H. Payne's on Tuesday August 22 honors Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McGhee and son John Henry of Kansas City and nephew Boyd McGhee of Lawrence. Sears employee McGhee enjoys a two week vacation as neighbors relatives and friends share cake gifts and memories.

Sunday gathering at the Woolf home featured Mrs. Wilbur Gooch and Nile Gooch visiting from Larned Kansas. Attendees shared a large meal under maple shade then heard family histories songs and readings in an intimate afternoon program.
Mr and Mrs Stephen Jerome of near Green Castle hosted relatives Monday night with a generous supper and ice cream. Guests included Mr and Mrs Harrison Jerome and daughter Rosabell of Fort Smith Arkansas, Mr and Mrs Buck Greenstreet and daughters Lenora and Evelyn, Mr and Mrs Gurna Jerome and children Carlos and Carlene, Mr and Mrs Clyde Brinkley and daughter Helen Louise, Sylvia Stephenson.
Mr. and Mrs. Nile Jerome, Hollis Bunch, and Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Jerome are listed with children Mary, Kenneth, Thelma, Raymond, Cecil, Clenton, Hubert, Byrdie, Ethel and Floyd Blanch in a notice naming next of kin and household members.
Mr and Mrs Glen Westfall hosted the Westfall Reunion at their home south of North Salem on Sunday August 28. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Wm McCollum with Wanda Mae and Clifford, Mr and Mrs John Hoselton, Mr and Mrs Ray Westfall with Betty Jo and Rose Mary and Glen Kenneth and Frank, Mr and Mrs Frank Tucker with DeVaun and Edwin, Mrs W H Tucker and Dorothy Minor. The dinner was enjoyed and the afternoon filled with visiting. They departed hoping to meet again soon.
Mr and Mrs H E Wicker and daughter Harriett hosted a seven o clock dinner Monday honoring Miss Orryl Adams who will teach in Birmingham Alabama and Harvey Fields Dickinson who will attend Culver Stockton College in September A three course dinner followed by bridge and music. Other guests included Mr and Mrs W H Dickinson Mr and Mrs Guy Adams Josie Jones and Miss Dorig Burnham of St Louis.

The Beginner's Class of the M E Church South enjoyed a party hosted by Mrs Geral dine Brehm on Wednesday August 24. Games followed by refreshments were served by the hostess and Charlene Haggard. Present were J D Dodson Charles Vincent Hershel Shouse Saralou Schrock Jerry Lee Brehm and Mrs Rosalie Schrock.
Mr and Mrs John Browning entertained the Adams Wesley Class on August 24 with a postponed business meeting to be led by Mrs Alta McCormick. Several contests and refreshments followed. attendees included Elmo and Edith Schrock Arthur and Mary Bennett plus other couples and guests Maude Morris W A Ware and families.

Walter and Mrs. Prather run 520 acres, with a family cemetery nearby, and a hobby of rare plants stones and relics has transformed rough terrain into a magical landscape. Mrs. L. W. Humme entertained many children at a party at her home on Thursday afternoon August 18 in honor of her niece Billy Joe Twyman eighth birthday. Balloons were given as favors and refreshments were served.

Harold Rainer aged 19 the son of Mrs Nettie Rainer of Milan was critically hurt while removing part of an old bridge on highway No 6 northeast of Milan. A slipping cable caused the structure to fall crushing both feet and breaking his right leg below the knee. He was taken home for treatment.
Cecil Hill aged 25 of Milan Mo was found dead along state highway No 5 south of Milan at about 7 am August 30. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the temple. No direct cause is known at this time.
Friends and relatives of Willie Head and his Detroit family met Wednesday near West Yellow Creek by Norman McDonnald's. The day included fishing, bathing, and visiting with a feast from well filled baskets. Present were Norman McDonnald and family, Chas Schriener and wife, Delbert Asher and family, Bruce.
Miss Lorraine Glaze entertained guests with a golf bridge party at her home featuring seven tables and artistic place cards. A two course dinner was served at five thirty, aided by her mother and Mrs. Josie Jones. Mrs. Mable Harvey won the high score, with out of town guests Mrs. D A Taylor, Mrs. Vane Thurlow of Linneus, and Miss Chloe Fields of Reger in attendance.
David Linhart longtime Littleton resident died Tuesday evening at eleven. Born December 31 1842 in Pittsburgh he would have turned ninety this December. He lived in Missouri and Colorado during boom days and raised horses and cattle east of Littleton before settling in town. Surviving are two sons a daughter a niece three granddaughters one grandson and four great grandchildren. Funeral 2:30 p m Friday at the Presbyterian church with burial in Littleton cemetery.
