Linn County plant officials urge applying lime six months to a year before sowing red clover to boost growth. An abundance of available lime increases nitrogen nodules and nitrate formation, aiding establishment and weather resilience. Lime can be applied to current crops or soybean land for 1938 clover seedings, any time after plowing and before or after planting, as fields are cultivated.
Farmers turn from square rectangular fields to contour farming and strip cropping on slopes. The move, urged by the Soil Conservation Service, reduces erosion and runoff while saving time and effort, with lime applications helping young clover seeded next spring.
