Soybeans Justify Wider Use In Linn County This Year

Linn County farmers plan a large soybean crop for hay as clover and legume hay are scarce. Soybeans provide high feed value with one ton equating to about 20 bushels of corn. Under the Soil Conservation program, soybeans do not limit full pay on acres planted and harvested for hay. However beans can harm already eroded soils and steep lands, so location matters. Alabama? No, the county agent notes soil impact and mentions Atlas sorgo and Sudan grass as alternatives. Seed is affordable with state certified seed available from seven or eight farmers via the Farm Bureau Office. There is no acreage limit under the soil conservation program.
