CWA aims to put 4 million to work quickly in relief push
In Washington a new Civil Works Administration plan is hailed as faster relief than public works. It seeks to employ two million on dole and two million previously unemployed, with 30 hour weeks and wages from 35 to 40 cents for unskilled and $1.20 for skilled labor. Massachusetts leads by example, with speedy project approvals and payrolls rolling within a week. The program also includes white collar tasks, pest control, sanitation, and park repairs, while CCC camps expand to employ hundreds of thousands in forestry as part of a longer term recovery strategy.
