Steel Shortages Hammer Farmers Amid Strikes and Price Ceilings
The American Iron and Steel Institute warns farm steel supplies are tight due to strikes by steel workers and coal miners plus restrictive OPA price ceilings. Production losses reach about 9 million tons, with four weeks of paralysis in January and February and ongoing impact into May. Bale ties and nails face rising demand and scarce supply while capacity remains ample if operations resume. The industry plans to invest 327 million dollars this year to upgrade capacity and prevent future shortages.
