Unions Block Wage Increase in Railroad Labor Dispute
The Brotherhoods of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen and Enginemen and Switchmen's Union of North America, representing 125 000 rail workers, refuse a 15 4 percent wage rise offered to all rail employees while nine unions accepted for 1 175 million workers. The dispute targets higher pay and new working rules, with mediation and possible fact finding under the Railway Labor Act. Leaders began strike ballots and resisted arbitration, despite railroads' cooperation with mediation boards.
