Bathing Rules For Monks In Fourteenth Century England
Regulations from St Augustine's Canterbury and St Peter's Westminster show monks could bathe twice a year before Christmas and Pentecost with four monks per day. Bathing shifted from four annual baths to two in the Fourteenth century, aided by servant washings and extra food and beer on bath days at Westminster. Bathing was done sitting in a tub and conducted in silence initially, a custom later discarded.
