Fire apparatus safety ordinance posted for motorists

An older city ordinance adopted October 5 1926 warns motorists to yield to fire and police apparatus. Drivers must move to the right curb and slow to ten miles per hour when approaching emergency vehicles. No vehicle may follow within 300 feet or park within 300 feet of a fire unit. fines range from two to twenty dollars.

Funeral of J. T. Robertson Held Wednesday

Funeral services for James Thomas Robertson, longtime Herreshoff Company machinist and engineer, were held Wednesday at his 40 Constitution street home. Attended by relatives, United Brothers Lodge, I O O F members, St Michael's Church vestry and Brotherhood, and Herreshoff officials and employees. Floral tributes included a large blanket from the Herreshoff Company. Interment in North Cemetery with Rev Beverly M Boyd presiding. Bearers were Odd Fellows members and Herreshoff employees led by Dr W Fred Williams and Elisha Hibbert.

Local Man Loses Auto to Fire in District 36 incident

Firefighters from four companies battled a blaze that destroyed Jesse P. Silvia’s car near the Herreshoff estate on the District 36 roads. Estimated at 500 dollars, the auto likely suffered a short circuit. No insurance. Traffic beacon at High and Franklin was knocked aside by a separate minor collision involving five youths.

Sewer Cleared Partially at Oliver Street Outflow Harbor

Engineer W W Perry of the Sewer Department partly cleared obstructions in the Oliver street sewer outlet where it empties into the harbor about 1500 feet from shore. Water pressure and weeks of effort allow sewage to pass through but not satisfactorily. Work continues at low tide to achieve a thorough clearing of the main pipe. When blocked, sewage entered an emergency pipe into shallow water causing odors and a warning to bathers in the northeasterly harbor area for seven weeks.

Life Saving Corps Water Carnival at Bristol Harbor

Bristol Branch of the United States Volunteer Life Saving Corps plans a water carnival off Church Street Wharf in Bristol harbor on Saturday August 25. Events include 50 and 100 yard swims for boys and girls and men and women, a 220 yard swim, dives, backstroke, a one mile swim, a rescue race, and a championship dory race with participants from other branches.

Retired NIR Co employees visit for get together

About 50 former National India Rubber Company workers met at the plant for a retirement get together in the new employee recreation room. Automobiles were provided to bring guests, and H. P. Morrissey served a chicken dinner. Manager Maurice C. Smith Jr. welcomed them and invited continued visits to the plant.
