Memorial trees planted on the Common recall 1880 anniversary

The note recalls four memorial trees planted on the Common to honor founders Nathaniel Oliver Stephen Burton John Walley and Nathaniel Byfield. The saplings rested in half barrels and were set with the original soil as crowds watched Edward S. Babbitt speak of lasting remembrance beyond memory.

Mt Hope Bridge Purchase Reached For 2 9 Million

The Mt Hope Bridge will become public property on November 1 after a 2.9 million dollar agreement between the Mt Hope Bridge Authority and the bridge corporation. Tolls are expected to drop to 25 cents, with state ownership to follow 28 years after its 1929 dedication.

Routes at End of Metacom Ave Studied by State DPW

State public works considers multiple new southern Metacom Avenue routes. Deputy director Thomas P. Harding says a plan links the east end of Griswold Avenue to the Mt. Hope Bridge via Riva Associates. Options run near Mt. Hope Bay or midway between shore and Ferry Road, both avoiding steep curves and near the Nike missile site to be built south of Griswold Avenue.

North Avenue repair bids opened for TowGate project

Bids were opened at 7 30 for the North Avenue repair project, with the council previously returning them at the August 8 meeting because the specifications were unavailable at that time.

Flower Show Set for Bristol 275th Anniversary

The Flower Show will run Friday and Saturday September 23 and 24 as part of the 275th celebration. It will be held in the Bristol Historical Society rooms on the library building’s first floor.
