The Bristol finance committee approved a $5975 budget for the 75th anniversary celebration including a $3000 parade fund, $800 for a historical pageant, $300 decorations, $800 fireworks, $525 float prizes, $150 for exhibits and tours, and $400 for music. At the Hillsgrove weather station the Rhode Island bureau tracked Hurricane Diane as it weakened near Narragansett Bay. Meteorologist Mario Leone explained rapid teletype relays and new warning systems that now reach 33 police departments and multiple radio stations and newspapers across the state.
The Bristol Chamber of Commerce moves to organize a five member committee to stage a 1956 Race Week with sail boats power boats and outboard craft. Proposals include additions to events and trophies by local officials and state factions.
The Bristoljians Away From Home committee sent 300 formal engraved invitations to former residents for the 275th celebration week. Recipients reached up to 30 states Puerto Rico and England with 700 more to mail next week. Chairman Anthony Iasiello urges anyone with Bristolian addresses to contact him.
Mrs Emma Gardiner marked her 99th birthday at Bristol Convalescent Home on Church Street. Born in Thompsonville she taught before marriage and lived in Riverside and Dighton before moving to town four years ago. Her family includes four sons Harold Stephen and Edward with grandchildren and many greats.
Giles, director of the 275th anniversary pageant, says the production is progressing well and on the home stretch. at st marys auditorium he notes five indian episodes well organized under mrs arthur tattrie and roger perreira, with msgr lynch urging another meeting next wednesday. three more episode groups including irish italian world war ii and the Charleston are shaping up with music by earl and mrs emma rounds. volunteers are urged to contact giles.
The second annual Playgrounds Awards Night is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the Common. Local donors will award plaques and trophies to outstanding boy and girl participants from various playgrounds and memorial areas.
